Default Code Reader

Does anyone know of a reliable place to buy a Fault Code Reader? I've been stung on e-bay for one of those hand-held ones and had to start a claim dispute with PayPal against the company (based in Rochester, Kent. Don't want to give a company name until I get my money back, and it might be a genuine mistake, but my instinct says he's a skank). In the meantime I still want to get hold of a reader, and I don't have a laptop so VAGCOM is out.
Any help appreciated
