Unplug it, and plug it back in again.

Check that no dirt has got into the contacts.

Hope you didn't pull it by the wiring..

Find someone local with Vag-Com. Read the code and reset it. If it doesn't reappear breathe a sigh of relief. Should be just a glitch ( ignition wasn't on when you disconnected it was it? ) If light comes back on the Vag-Com will point you in right direction. I'm just south of Aberdeen if that's any use to you.

In an emergency, For future reference you can clear the "check engine light" by disconecting the battery for a few minuites, If it dosent come back on the problem was intermittent if it comes back on again then you have a problem. BEST way is still to get to someone with vag com or the dealer as they can read the fault code before re-setting it

The AA can also read it with their diagnostic equipment, for those with a 4x4 its not listed on the AA list but enter Octy rs, it works

First time I had an engine management light come up I hi-tailed it to the local dealership. Twenty seven quid later they said there was nothing recorded in the ECU's memory. Don't quite understand the logic here - SOMETHING must have tripped the light and that means something is recorded in the fault log.
Point is - it doesn't take many trips to the dealers before you've spent the money that a vag-com costs. Wouldn't be without a V-C now.
Cheers,

Pete

Change dealers !, mine has done it twice FOC, both times it was due to a leaking joint on the Exhaust I had added to the car causing an emission error. Theyve also had the car in & road tested it etc for suspected wheel bearing failure to find that the Woolfrace wheels had buckled, again no charge. Looks like my dealers a gem & I didnt even buy either Skoda from them.

That sounds like a handy gadget. How much? Where from? How easy is it to use

There's a comprehensive "sticky" at the top of the Diagnostics forum that gives details of several suppliers. Ross Tech seems to be the most focussed. Prices range from a couple of quid on eBay (take your chance !) to around 50 quid from OBD.com and Ross Tech a bit more. Software varies depending on whether you go for the limited option of shareware (you don't get all the functions - but still pretty useful) or spend the extra 99 dollars on the full singing and dancing package with support and updates. Make sure you get a cable that is compatible with your laptop - either serial or USB cos they don't mix.
Ease of use ? Very easy mostly. The programme advises you what is safe to look at and what is best left alone unless you have specialist knowledge.
Cheers.
