I got mine from here, they are based in Spain, but I had mine within 3 days, and they are the cheapest around I found.

They sell the USB version, or the Serial version.

Does the Octy 1 not have one aswell ? I was told by the dealer I couldn't put a cut-off switch in it due to the Can-Bus, although I wouldn't believe a thing he says now

Some other sources of VAG-COM cables are listed in this thread:

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/t6796...g-vag-com.html

Ross-Tech's site below has an explanation of what cables work with what cars and which versions of VAG-COM software. It is worth reading to avoid buying the wrong type of cable. The gold-plated solution is to buy their HEX-USB+CAN cable which works with cars requiring a direct CAN connection. It does not need VAG-COM software to be activated (ie it works as a dongle) so will work with any laptop with that software installed. Unfortunately it is not cheap but it is future proof should you buy the new Octavia or one of the latest VAG offerings.

Yes, the Octy 1 does use the CANBUS...however, AFAIK the difference is that the Octy1 uses an OBDII port, whereas the Octy2 interface links directly into the CANBUS...

Might be wrong though.

Here is another source of cables. They come direct from China, but appear well made. I chose the cheaper surface mail option and despite warnings from the seller that it would be 20 business days, it arrived in just over a week. I paid a total of £24 including shipping ...

One with a plug on either end. If you need a USB end, it will cost you more because they will sell you an adapter cable from serial to USB. Other than that, it's just OBD2, AFAIK.

CAN-BUS enabled leads - which were previously only available direct from Ross-Tech in the States - are now available in the UK. Further details can be found below:

Does the Fabia VRS require a CAN-BUS lead, though, Denis?

Dunno, it's a moulded plug and I'm not about to rip it apart...

No, Nick, but all the Golf-5 platform cars (presumably including the New Octavia) and the latest Audi A3, A6 and A8 do require a direct CAN connection.

The advantages of buying, say, the HEX-USB+CAN lead is that it covers the latest VAG cars whilst being fully backwardly compatible; it is USB hence will work with the latest laptops which may or may not also have a serial port; and it has an inbuilt dongle enabling it to be used with any laptop or PC with VAG-COM software installed but without that the need for that software being registered to that computer. OK, so I've convinced myself that is the one to go for, although at £249 + £7.95 pp it is expensive. OTOH that does include £85 for a registered copy of VAG-COM software. Perhaps SWMBO can be convinced to buy it for my imminent birthday...

PS: This is the spec:

Package D - "HEX-USB+CAN"
- Professional oriented, portable, expandable
- USB connection
USB connector plugs into most modern laptops! (USB 1.1 or 2.0)
Compatible with the latest cars which require a direct CAN connection for diagnostics including all Golf-5 platform cars and latest Audi A3, A6 and A8.
Protocol timing indistinguishable from a real VAG/VAS tool. Works reliably even with "difficult" control modules such as the 1991-1994 1Z Audi TDIs and the 1993-1994 Audi 2.6L with Hella ECU.
Built-In VAG-Saver functionality -- instantly alerts the user if either the K/K1 line or the L/K2 line is shorted to Ground or Vbatt.
Full support for dual-K lines found in "new" (B6/8E chassis Audi A4 and 2002+ Audi A6 -- no VAS-6017 required -- no manual switches!
Fully backwards compatible with older cars using a single K-line or K plus L.
Bi-Color (red/green) status/activity LED.
12 month guarantee against defects.
For use with Windows® '95, '98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000 & XP

It's school half term next week and SWMBO is going away to visit her mum and sister in Yorkshire for a while. I'm hoping that Ross-Tech may be able to ship the HEX-USB+CAN interface I have just ordered in time for it to arrive while she is away.

PS: I'm letting her take the Octavia so will be earning a few brownie points for that. Oh, and she is aware that I still need to book with Jabba to have a variable boost controller fitted.

Are you sending away to the states for the lead or are you buying it from their UK agent?

I think if they are bought directly from Ross-tech they are shown as a computer lead and in most cases no import duty has been charged.

The UK agent - www.vag-com.co.uk (aka Cister Automotive) is actually based in the USA. www.jbrperformance.co.uk ship the leads for them at UK prices but are awaiting stock of that type of cable and delivery to them is likely to be a few weeks yet. So I have ordered direct from Ross-Tech.

I ordered a HEX-USB+CAN VAG-COM interface cable direct from Ross-Tech in Philadelphia around midday on Friday. It has just been delivered by FedEx Express. A big to Ross-Tech for their customer service.

Looks like about £290 for the USB&CAN from the UK or £210 inc Shipping from US. Just have to watch customs.
