Interested in Learning how to Remap ECU

Hi,
Are there any members, like me, that would be interested in learning how to remap/ flash an ecu.
Perhaps the start is an understanding of vag-com.
I would appreciate your ideas!

Best wishes

Re: Interested in Learning how to Remap ECU

I'd love to, but I suspect that I don't have the necessary skills (car or computer!) to do it. If you manage to find any more out, count me in

VAG-COM is relatively trivial in comparison and is a specific tool for interrogating/changing codings on the ECU. It cannot be used to rewrite/reflash an ECU

An online demo of VAG-COM can be found on the Ross-tech site

Re: Interested in Learning how to Remap ECU

Hi,
Initially it looks very technical, but I wondered if there is a software package that would make the process more user friendly.
Chris 55 took a look at your page - it looks very technical I agree. Have you seen this tool:

http://www.elecauto.com/logicaldevices.htm

Also, I know a little about hardware/ software as iam an IT teacher at 6th form college.
I appreciate your posts.

Re: Interested in Learning how to Remap ECU

There are tools out there for remapping cars. They allow parameters to be tweaked such as boost, fueling timing.

Simple versions of these are lemmiwinks, Custom-Settings and APR V-Tune, however these only allow global changes. More advanced versions which allow tweaking throughout the entire tables are available from the likes of Dimsport but are very expensive and only viable if you are able to sell alot of remaps.

Eddy,
Thanks for the post.
Anny experience of the 'limited parameter' tools. Do you know which parameters you can adjust.
Have you got any links?

Best wishes

Here's a link to Lemmiwinks by badger 5 http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=45369

And one for APR V-Tune

I too would also be interested in any info.

Re: Interested in Learning how to Remap ECU

You can only use APR V-Tune if you have APR software and the V-Tune tweaking is enabled. AFAIK lemmiwinks is no longer available (although I have a copy). Custom-Settings is available on the Custom-Code website.

On a standard car you can adjust timing up or down, boost can only be adjusted down (unless you have a CC remap), there's also a few other things. If you download the software there are pop-up explanations if you hover the cursor over each of the options.

EDIT: Looks like Bill has made lemmiwinks available on his site.

Re: Interested in Learning how to Remap ECU

Just to add you WILL need vagcom along with any of these tools to enable you to log the changes and ensure the engine is running safely and if there has been an improvement.

Agree. didn't Revo have a good guide about sps and checking the changes with vag-com?

Anyone tried lemmiwink or cc on a diesel yet to see if it works?

Re: Interested in Learning how to Remap ECU

Thanks above contributors!
I assume that these tools are suitable for diesel and petrol turbo cars.
Firstly, I would like to upload some standard and modified maps to compare.
Would the tools be capable of uploading from ECU?
There are a number of Fabia VRS owners that have modified maps by jabba etc I would likew to study. The progree on to my own car where a non standard turbo or injectors have been added.
Reasonable plan?

Re: Interested in Learning how to Remap ECU

I have done a fair bit of research on this. It's not something to be taken lightly.

I do have the schematics of a device that will enable you to reprogram your ECU but you would have to be pretty savvy with electronics to build it. To buy a ready made device would cost circa 1 - 2 thousand pounds although some cheaper can be found by searching German ebay.

Re: Interested in Learning how to Remap ECU

Hi,
Iam not an electronics expert. perhaps BryanD might be interested in taking a look at the schematics will he returns from his Dutch trip.
VRS Stu and others - I wondered if a group could form to buy a second hand device off ebay germany. Have you got an idea of the approximate price they auction for, or, have you links to items being offered for auction on ebay currently.

Best wishes

Re: Interested in Learning how to Remap ECU

Why buy old technology? Most current remaps are done using a serial cable and laptop. It's similar to a vagcom cable but wired differently. I suspect the device you are referring to is some sort of EPROM burning device and will also involve desoldering and soldering to change and doing this too many times is likely to kill your ECU.

John

Don't take this the worng way, I'm not wishing to put you down or belittle your capabilities but perhaps some things are best left to those that know what they are doing. Custom mappers are highly skilled guys. You could do a lot of damage to your car.

If you just want to map a few cars a make a few ££ then you can buy the kit generic maps from Red Dot Racing resellers.

All remaps I've seen are done with a cable and laptop. There's no big box of tricks.

Re: Interested in Learning how to Remap ECU

You still need an interface Eddy. It's not a big box of tricks simply a communications device.

That costs £1-2k

Revo and Custom-Code don't use anything near as complex, their cables are very similar to a vagcom cable.

Re: Interested in Learning how to Remap ECU

The VAG-COM cable still uses an interface - It's normally built into the OBD plug.

So what equipment and software can you recommend for the job?

I know the interface is built into the plug but it's alot smaller than what you linked to and certainly doesn't cost £1-2k just for the cable.

From what I've seen of your link it uses generic maps if you want to write custom maps you need software specifically for that such as dimpsort or one of the many others out there. However as you have said if you don't know what you're doing then it's not a good idea taking it on. I also expect a licence for the software is gonna be very expensive.
