Right then, got the lead, got the VAG-COM (release 409 1-S). I know it's an older version, but it's a start!
Connected everything but reads sod all

What have I missed / not done / done wrong?

Where did you buy it?
Whomever sold you the interface should be the first person you ask for assistance.

Sorry, I do not understand some of the "colloquial" phrases you're using.
