Ross-Tech Hex-usb+can Cable.

I'm thinking of buying one of the above CAN Interfaces - I'm pretty confident its the right one for my Octavia Mk2 chassis Z1.

But can anyone tell me if it's OK for my Son's car which is a Mk4 Seat Ibiza FR TDI PD 130 "06 Facelift" I believe the chasis type is 6L.

The Ross-Tech site doesnt specifically mention this model and i can't otherwise clarify.

There seems to be some difference about the Polo/Fabia/Ibiza which I can't work out.

We've tried the cheapy Chinese KKL 409.1 interface which the laptop saw ok, but it couldn't read either car, so I suspect CAN interface needed for both cars, but can't prove it for the Ibiza.

I don't really want to fork out unless I'm sure it'll work on both cars.

Many Thanks

The Ibiza (6L) is not stated on our site because it's not available in the US. However, it uses a single K-line, no CAN.

Actually there should not be much difference between these, any special point you are atalking about.

Anyway, a HEX+CAN interface will cover both models.

Re: Ross-Tech Hex-usb+can Cable.

You need this one for it to work on both vehicles

The difference was that these models seemed not to be mentioneed on Ross-Tech site. Thats all.

Many Thanks for your help.

Re: Ross-Tech Hex-usb+can Cable.

Here's a question.

It's my Ibiza we're talking about - hi dad.

I have an aftermarket HU fitted, but I also have a Adapater that swaps the appropriate cables ( I forget which ones, but this cable I liberated from my Octavia1 when I sold it in Sept, and I used it in there with an aftermarket HU too)

I presume you're referring to the aftermarket HU problem that can blow VAG-COM cables?

Ross-Tech: VAG-COM: Afterrmarket Radio Problem

The later genuine cables have protection for this, but read the page anyway.

Re: Ross-Tech Hex-usb+can Cable.

Ah, I never checked this before we connected the cable.

However, I was aware of the K-Line problem with my Skoda Octavia, as I once read about them possibly blowing up devices. Therefore, I bought a cable that swapped the K Line back over, and I retained this when fitting the new HU to my Ibizs

Re: Ross-Tech Hex-usb+can Cable.

Oh yeah, worth mentioning that my Ibiza IS CAN based - we did the CAN Gateway check and it read it fine.

Have to disagree with that. The fact that it has a CAN-Gateway doesn't actually tell you that the diagnostics are working via CAN - it only tells you that the car uses CAN internally.

Re: Ross-Tech Hex-usb+can Cable.

I see, well you know better than me!

How can I check for sure?

I noticed when it was running the communications, at the top left of the screen it kept saying CAN init - what's that then?

You can run Control Module Finder with the "Use CAN Only" feature enabled and see that it finds no modules.

With a CAN-capable interface, VAG-COM will by default try to contact a control module via CAN before it tries on the K-line. It does this because it takes only a fraction of a second to see whether a module will answer on CAN, but several seconds (at best) to see if a module will answer on the K-line.

You can disable this by going to the Options Screen and checking "Bypass CAN Init".

Be sure to re-enable this before complaining that VAG-COM stopped working on your Mk. 2 Octavia. ;-)
