Thumbs down 03 Fabia Timing Chain Problem finally sorted

03 Fabia 1.2 HTP (32k miles)started to stutter when driving. Engine management warning light came on. Called the AA and computer diagnostic said map sensor but not 100% sure. Towed to main dealer who said timing was off and could have been caused by stretched timing chain, chain skipping on cog or some worn parts. Have to strip down the engine to be sure. Possible major repairs.Should timing chain not cause probles till at least 120K miles??Do not know yet if skoda will cover repairs if fault was caused by faulty parts. Anybody have similar problems?

I thought the timing chains on the HTPs were designed to last forwever (ie. nothing needs changing for the useable life of the engine) could be wrong though!

Re: 03 Fabia 1.2 HTP Timing Chain Problem

the only time ive seen a timing chain go wrong on a 1.2 is when the owner let the oil level drop to just under the minimum. Going around a corner the little amount of oil in the sum couldnt keep the pump fed. Oil pressure drop and the oil fed tensioner went weak, timing goes out and can cause engine damage.

Re: 03 Fabia 1.2 HTP Timing Chain Problem

sounds odd... when i had my 1.2 i would hear it tightening at some start ups... but i too was under the impression was for life of engine.

Re: 03 Fabia 1.2 HTP Timing Chain Problem

Spoke to dealer today. They are waiting to fit new timing chain, guide rail and tensioner when they get new bolts delivered. Still no answer from Skoda Ireland after a week to tell if they are going to cover the cost of repair (parts and labour). Meanwhile i am heading into my third week without a car. Great service or what???

Re: 03 Fabia 1.2 HTP Timing Chain Problem

Bolts arrived. Dealer said they would repair my car in between other jobs and might have it ready to TEST by FRIDAY to see if there is further damage (valves, block etc). This is remember a main dealer not a back street garage.
Rang Skoda (Ireland) customer services and spoke to a rep called Dave. Told him how unhappy I was with the service I have recieved from the dealer and the lack of answers from Skoda about who would pay to fix my car. Especially as the car enters it's 3rd week in the garage. He spoke with the dealer and then told me that the car will be tested tomorrow morning. He will then contact me with full information.

Re: 03 Fabia 1.2 HTP Timing Chain Problem

Dont forget dealers are booked up weeks in advance. So break downs have to be slotted in between other jobs or take a ticket and wait thier turn.

They will try a chain etc and see if it works, there isnt really another way of telling if valves etc are bent without stripping the engine down.

Finally collected car this afternoon. New timing chain, guide rail and tensioner fitted. And a bill of €357 for labour.

Re: 03 Fabia 1.2 HTP Timing Chain Problem

But is the problem fixed? I just bought a second-hand Skoda Fabia Sedan (from 2003) and I hear a "metallic" noise at low revs from the engine. Before I bought it I went to the service and the guys there told me it comes from the timing chain

'The car is running fine now but I hope that the same thing is not going to happen again when my car hits 60k miles especially as it is filled with oil recommended by skoda.
