0w-30 or 5w-40 oil?

weird but the list on here states you need 5w40 oil and went to halfords and they say (verbally and on a sign above oils) its 0w-30.

asked them if halfords do their own and they said no, went on the website and:

That definitly cannot be the correct oil as it does not state it meets the requirements of VW505.01. Which I thought was the standard for the PD130?

EDIT - Oh god it does, I can't read. I'm such a berk; forgive me.

lol i think it has something to do with fixed and variable servicing and as far as i know mine is every 10k or yearly, so i will stick to the 5w-40 as told on here but its a good price i think for 5 ltrs the halfords own.

Re: 0w-30 or 5w-40 oil?

You must use an oil which meets specification VW 505 01 - ie one which has been tested and approved as meeting that spec . Stating that an oil is suitable for engines requiring VW 505.01 specification oil does not necessarily mean that it has been approved as meeting that spec, and more likely means that it does not. Oils meeting spec VW 505.01 have a viscosity of 5W-40 and may be semi or fully synthetic.

The Octavia with the PD130 engine needs spec VW 506.01 oil, ie 0W-30 fully synthetic LongLife oil.

However it is perfectly fine to use 506.01 longlife oil on a fixed regime.

Re: 0w-30 or 5w-40 oil?

so i am prussuming that with the above you would stay away from the halfords own brand oil athough it is actually under £22 for 5ltrs now (on offer on the net) but buy one get one free in the store, surely they cant state it is fine for the needs when it is not?

Re: 0w-30 or 5w-40 oil?

Would there be issues using 10/40 semi synthetic in a 130PD VRS?

Re: 0w-30 or 5w-40 oil?

505.01 is what you should look for.
It doesn't matter whether it's semi or fully synthetic.
505.01 is all that matters.
All Mk Fabias are on fixed servicing.

Re: 0w-30 or 5w-40 oil?

At my Halfrauds the 2 for 1 offer is not on the 505.01. The bottles look similar, but the spec is different. The "proper" stuff is not on offer, just the fully synthetic lower spec.

Re: 0w-30 or 5w-40 oil?

If you go to the Castrol website there's a wizard which helps you choose the right oil for your car. (Apparently you can text 'oil' to 83080).

Try: http://www.ew2.lubesinfo.com/choosemake.asp

It recommends EDGE TURBO DIESEL 5W-40 and the bottle says it's to 505.01

There's a sticky at the top about oil btw
