£180 10,000 mile service

Phoned up Mitchell Skoda in Greasby and asked how much for a 10,000 mile service and to check on the recall as well and they said the service is £180 Is this the best deal I'm going to get? Or should I drive/haggle else where?

I think it depends which service you ask for as I seem to recall seeing two listed in my dealer.

1. Oil/lubrication service which is for cars that do more miles

2. 10,000 mile annual service

Subtle difference but it's a good way to rake in the cash!

Mine is due for the first service soon - it's showing 9,900 miles but no indication that it wants to see the dealer yet. Both of the other Fabias I've had indicated early.

Fabia vRS. So what does it need? A 10,000 mile service or just oil?

Is £180 excessive? Are they doing it because I am a girl?

Annual service at Gorner Warrington cost me £130 last month. So £180, whether annual or 10k, seems excessive, especially as these two prices are directly comparible as both dealers are in the same area of the country (labour rates should be near enough identical).

Get a male friend to ring up and see what price he's given!

Has your car done 10,000 miles, or is it a year old?

I had my octys first service last year, it's on variable mileage service and had covered 22,000 and that only cost me £180, sounds a little steep for 10,000 service

Its on 9,978 miles so I am looking at the 10,000 mile service & is not yet a year old. I will get Smudger to phone up some other dealers to get some better prices. If it is different when he phones up Mitchells then I'll feed their balls to the dog (Sandy), tweek their ears and get Smudger in a Sandwhich board outside slagging em off

Will also see if the Ellesmere port branch will give a different price to the Greasby one.

Must get Smudger to clean car first

I had my 10K oil change plus the annual inspection service done at the same time. Work done by Horton Skoda in Lincoln at the cost of £155

If they're close enough for you i'd suggest you try them. Very good service.

Skoda recommend you have an inspection service each year. If you're car is likely to have more than one service a year, you only need to get the inspection done every other service, in which case, your 10k can just be a lube service (ie oil and filter) which should weigh in between 70-80 quid.
It will be even cheaper if you supply your own oil!

What does a 10,000 service/inspection involve then? Do I need both to keep the warrenty happy?

The service/inspection is an oil change plus the annual inspection. So long as you have an annual inspection done at one of the services each year, your warranty is fine. Your major services (20k, 40k, 60k, etc) include an inspection.

Skoda have caused real confusion here

It's reasonably clear what happens if you do 10,000 or 20,000 miels a year and 5,000 can be readily deduced. But what if like me you're doing about 15,000?

Here's a posting I made on another thread to which no one gave an explanation:

The Fabia has an absurdly stupid servicing regime.

"Every 10,000 miles carry out an Oil Change Service.

After one year carry out an Annual Inspection, the Annual Inspection always then includes an Oil Change Service.

If the car is driven 10,000 miles before one year has elapsed, carry out an Oil Change Service

If the car is driven more than 20,000 miles in a year, the Inspection Service should be carried out every 20,000 miles and not once a year."

There are then various additions at 20,000 (lots), 40,000 (lots), 60,000 70,000, 80,000, 100,000, and 120,000 mile intervals (not all relevant to every model) - and various additions at 2 year, 3 year, 4 year, 5 year and 15 year invervals (again not all relevant to every model)!!!

So let's example various scenarios:

For a car doing 5,000 miles per year:

An Annual Inspection including oil change every year - with a major service every four years - excepting brake fluid being changed every two years...

For a car doing 10,000 miles per year:

An Annual Inspection including oil change every year - with a major service every two years.

For a car doing 15,000 miles per year:

This is the tricky one - and potentially the one I fall into. In theory you'd have an Oil Change service at 8 months - then an Annual Inspection at 12 months; but an Annual Inspection is defined as including an Oil Change so the oil would only have been in the car for 5,000 miles... Then FOUR months later when the odometer hits 20,000 you have to have ANOTHER service!!! Now if this was only to inspect things due at the 20,000 service and not an Oil Change you'd then FOUR months later have to have an Oil Change since it will then have been in the car for 10,000 miles... And then the second Annual Inspection FOUR months later... This just doesn't make sense and I'd appreciate anyone who can interpret what I've suggested differently sticking within Skoda's stated regime.

Another interpretation would be to have an Oil Change service at 8 months/ 10,000 miles, then an Annual Service at 15,000/ 12 months - and then an Annual Service every 8 months/10,000 miles. Though this then doesn't fall into the 20,000/40,000 scenario so can't be the way forward.

As Hellfire suggests the "simple" way of looking at this conundrum is to simply take the Annual Inspection at 8 months/10,000 miles and work simply up from that point with an Inspection Service every 10,000 miles/ 8 months.

In fact that appears to be what the Service Record is suggesting because in mine it says "Next Inspection Service at 10,000 miles" which technically is INCORRECT! It should say "Next Oil Change..."

For a car doing 20,000 miles per year:

After 6 months an Oil Change service, then an Annual Inspection at 12 months (being a big service) , then an Oil Change service only at 30,000 miles/18 months with another big Annual Inspection at 40,000/2 years.

The result must be a certain degree of confusion when it comes to booking a car in for servicing - and it also presumably means fixed price servicing is impossible owing to the variety of things which might need doing at a service depending on the annual mileage

I'll be trying to discuss it with the dealer in about July if no one can come up with a more logical explanation...

This is VW group practice, not off Skoda's own back.

Right, i'm doing loadsa miles a year in mine, (had it less than a year) now so far,
10k miles service cost me £83.17
20k miles service cost me £150 (IIRC - think the bill is still in the logbook down in the car)

plus they wash it

I will be having the 30k one done in a few weeks (on 28k at the mo) so will let you know what that is... should be approx £80 I have been informed tho...

I tried Gorner and they too quoted me for the first service approx £130... don't know what you get for the extra money tho :s
