Default Buying advice - diesel

Hi...

I`m currently looking into px my 1.4 8v H/B for a diesel estate, and i`m searching advice regarding engine (1.4 80bhp or 1.9 100bhp) and sports seats.

Here in DK, the price diff. between the 1.4 and the 1.9 is 1100 pounds, but is the 1.9 much better than the 1.4? What about the durabillity? I drive quite briskly...so that should be taken into the considerations.

Also the sports seats, are they good, or?

Ì`m PX`ing because i have a new job, and have to drive more, around 35000 km/year.

And as im very happy with my current Fabia, why not buy one again.

Also, is it possible to remap it, without loosing my warranty?

Regards, Michael

PS: I know i should test drive them, but my dealer doesnt have the 1.9 atm.

I reckon the 1.9 PD100 engine is a cracking little motor! I should imagine it's as durable as any other VAG diesel, i.e., 200k miles shouldn't be a problem is serviced correctly.
Sports seats are I assume reclothed vRS seats? If so, definately go for them! The standard seats in the Fabia are appalling for holding you around the twisties (well, they don't hold me very well!).

1.4 is very economical and pretty nippy. 1.9 has slightly more grunt (but also more weight) and is slightly less economical. On the road, in standard form, I don't think there'd be much between them. 1.9 obviously has more tuning potential if you're looking at going down that route, but both can be tuned relatively cheaply and easily

Unfortunately, I'd say to drive both and see which you prefer!

Sports seats are a must and I'm not sure about remaps in your country, but here, all remaps will void the Skoda UK warranty!

I'd have to agree it's not an obvious choice like some would think. The 1.4 is better than the small engine size would lead you to belive.

I changed from a 1.9SDI (non Turbo) to a new 1.4TDI (80) in March and have now travelled 4600 miles in the car. The mid range torque for overtaking is very good for a three cylinder engine but I believe I made the wrong choice in not going for the 1.9TDI.....

The power band on the 1.4TDI seems narrow and unforgiving if your in the 'wrong gear'. My last car produced its peak torque from 1600rpm to 2800rpm, the 1.4TDI comes in at 2200rpm. I believe the four cylinder 1.9TDI produces maximum torque from 1800 to 2400rpm -more flexible.

I recently travelled 800 miles on holiday /touring using motorway, A roads and minor roads. Motor way speed was mostly 60mph and never more than 70mph. I drive with economy in mind (sorry Briskodians I'm advertising my pipe and slippers!!) The true fuel consumption (from filling the tank not the onboard computer which is 6mpg optomistic) was 52.66mpg - an awful figure compared to my previous 1.9SDI - I got better than 58mpg with that car even when running in. I was concerned that the advertised economy for the 1.4TDI is so much better than what I am currently getting - so I checked the 'Diesel Car' web site and checked their true fuel consumption readings for the equivalent VW and Seat 1.4TDI cars - the TRUE results were in the 51/53mpg range. I wished I had tested the 1.9TDI because I believe it would be a more satisfying drive with very little in the fuel consumption. You really have to rev the 1.4 to get performance from it.
Im looking forward to reading other opinions on this - I don't think I will be keeping the 1.4TDI too long.

Hi all,

First of all, thanks for all your answers.

My dealer phoned me today, and told me he had a 1.9 TDI i could have a play in, so i went for a test-drive.

Feels really nippy, gives a kick, but still have a quite wide powerband, where as the 1.4 dies very fast.

I had a 1.4 once as a loan car for a weekend, it was very nice....but the powerband....and absolutely nothing happening when under the turbo range.
But hey, as a 1.4 it does a cracking job!

I think i will go for the 1.9, but i need to get trough the trial period in my new job, before i do anything. But a Fabia Combi 1.9TDI in storm blue, with A/C, ESP, Cruise etc....mmmm. :-)

Regards, Michael
