Default Insurance with Cruise Control

Hi,

My insurance is now due for renewal so I did the confused.com thing which came up with Admiral as the cheapest at £278 fully comp protected.

I phoned them up and went through the million questions one of which was does your car have anything fitted as an optional extra. I thought I had best be honest and told them about my Cruise Control (fitted by Big K ).

It put the premium up by £25 . Is this normal??

I still went with them as it still worked out over £50 cheaper than my current renewal and has a lower excess and a greater mileage allowance.

Anyone else had this? I shudder to think how much they would add for a chip

Steve

Hmmm..... Personally I wouldnt have told them. I know you should declare all mods etc. but when I was 17, my mate and I both had Vauxhall Novas, we both fitted clear side indicators (the tiny wing mounted ones), he told his insurance company and I diddnt.

His premium went up by about £30 yet when my car was written off they said nothing about the side repeaters being non standard. And I was fully comp so they paid out.

At the end of the day though, if its cheaper than before you're still better off - and you have cruise control.

Direct line didn't charge me extra either......and for the sake of £25...is it really worth the risk of voiding your policy?

Im with Admiral and have cruise control they told me no extra charge as it is optional extra they also say that they will only replace/pay for the car as standard so even if you insure your mods they wont pay out for them. Complete Con IMO.

They do seem to be a weird bunch Admiral. Last year they worked out cheapest on Confused.com but after calling them up they went from £208 to £350 (on a Vectra). Reason being I had claimed for a new windscreen 2.5 years previous. I thought windscreen claims didn't count...

The main thing is they are not (hopefully) Zurich related, now they are truly dreadful!

I think most insurance companies are the same SH@T! I had a claim with Tesco and they were a joke.

I’ve never told my insurance any mods on my cars. If I had accident I would get my mate to pick the car up. He owns his own garage.

Sods have counted it as a modification for me... Surely that makes it more expensive. Also made me take Business cover because I drive to and from my 'other job' [Special - I don't even get paid for "Keeping Surrey Safer"]!

Here's a tip. Phone the AA for a quote, then if your car is less than 3 years old you'll get another 10% off the price because you have Skoda Breakdown cover (provided by the AA)

They added just £16 to my annual premium when I included all the extras; Metallic Paint, Cruise Control, ESP, Side Airbags, 3rd Rear Headrest, MSD Grill and a SEAT Strut Brace. All of these items are fully detailed on my insurance certificate. Give 'em a go-go

I'm with Zurich for my new Octy. They asked if I had any options and I told them but as none affected the outward appearance of the car they were not worried about it. I'd imagine some companies would be funny about aftermarket mods which could affect control of the car though like adding Cruise Control.

It's all got silly after that guy in the US went into the back of his winnebago to make a cup of tea while driving along beleiving that the cruise control was actually autopilot control. You know the story. He rolled it several times into a field and then sued the manufacturer as it wasn't stated clearly in the owner's manual that you still needed to steer when you turn on Cruise Control. 6 figure payout too!

Unless you were seriously injured and rushed to hospital, meanwhile the people you crashed into died and one seriously disabled, you make a full recovery, however, being in hospital you couldn't ring your mate, your car is automatically recovered, hey presto undeclared mods - your in shi.t creek mate

Just the sort of irresponsible driver who gets performance car users a bad name. How many other risks does he take?

Did you hear the story recently about the guy on a Renault forum who boasted about peverting the course of justice and speeding and later got a visit from the local Constabulary?

When I changed my policy to Direct Line a few months back, they didn't want to know about any factory-fit options (such as cruise, xenons). Suits me fine as long as they replace like with like!
