| Briskodian | Re: Insurance renewal time! lol what a waste of cash. Im 28 group 20 on the Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo 4yrs no claims and protected for a mere..... £250. The vRS would cost me (with same insurer) £190. ROFLOL @ £2k p.a. thats £167per month just to have it sit on the drive.... then fuel £100pcm then tax £16pcm then depreciation £300+pcm Ouch total £583... just shy of £7k a year - its no wonder that the youth of today compalin about not being able to save for a deposit - just get rid of the car for 2 years FFS. |

| Briskodian | Re: Insurance renewal time! I've always saved a substantial amount (£30+) by switching rather than accepting my renewal quote. Started off four years ago with a cruddy 1.3 Fiesta at £670 (although I was 25 at the time, I had no insurance history because I'd not owned my own car before that). Even just a single year's NCD made a substantial difference. The next year's premium was some £130 cheaper. The Fabia proved nearly £150 more expensive than the Fiesta, but having built up four years' No Claims, I only paid £235 a couple of months back for this year's premium. I am, though, cheesed off that confessing to somebody punting me up the back end at a roundabout four years ago always puts at least £20 on my quote, even though there were no qualms from the other guy about it being his fault. Except in one bizarre case where it actually knocked nearly £40 off the quote!!!

But surely youd rather spend that money on longer lasting things? Ok lets look at it another way - I'll assume you drive 10k per year so that £7k cost means that every mile you drive is costing you £0.70 EXCL Fuel & EXCL Servicing..... Are you seriously telling me that you dont care about that worrying issue in the slightest? Lets say a nice trip from London to Cardiff thats about 140 miles so a round trip of 280miles is going to cost you £196 and then you have the fuel which will cost (assuming 50mpg & £0.949/ltr) £25. So a total journey cost of £221. You can go by train 1st class for less than that... & you can have a nice cold beer on your way. You may well be able to afford this expensive lifestyle but it certainly is not what the vast majority of people can afford. From your stated age - Im sure your mortgage would love to receive a £7k a year overpayment or move/upgrade to a bigger nices house. Or just go on a £7k annual holiday.... now that would be amazing. Or you could even pay £7k + an extra £3k for 1 years track racing in a Renault Clio sport series. Dont get me wrong Im not having a go - nor do I care any less about you or your finances but to come out with such an arrogant comment makes me especially as most people chose this kind of car as they want CHEAP motoring.

| Briskodian | Re: Insurance renewal time! It is irresponsible to encourage others who may not be as well off as you into such high total running costs. I mean most people at the age of 20 will be earning ball park 18k gross and your paying out 7k of that on a car each YEAR!!! so living costs are tiny - not many jars of ale or holidays nor nice clothes nor xbox360. Nor thinking about it any mortgage payments. IS bank of mum & dad still running for you? If so shame on you let them enjoy their old age without having to constantly give you financial aid. |

| Briskodian | Re: Insurance renewal time! sounds about right I give valid reason why paying that much for insurance is crazy and its far cheaper to go by taxi everywhere but your retorte is "Do everyone a favour....." Worrying really if that is all you can use as a posative for paying so much towards the running costs of a car. |

| Briskodian | Re: Insurance renewal time! Welshy - I can perfectly understand why he said "Do everyone a favour..." In the space of two posts you have gone from saying "Dont get me wrong Im not having a go" to saying its irresponsible to encourage others into such high running costs. I dont see anywhere him encouraging others to do it and you just seem intent on stiring things up. Why are you assuming he's on 18k a year? He could be on 20k,30k, 40k a year or had a nice inheritance left to him, but what he does with his money is his decision and as long as it doesn't affect me then he can do what ever he wants with it. I'm sure if he didn't insure it and got caught you would be the first one to rub his nose in it! |

| Briskodian | Re: Insurance renewal time! No I said ave salary for that age group. Given Uk ave salary is £23k and clearly the sub 20 age group i.e. specifically not degree qualified would certainly struggle to get £20k let alone 30/40k on A Levels or GCSE's only. What that chap meant was Do HIM a favour, clearly when the numbers are shown in the light of day and what it could be put towards then it does make grim reading. But surely you must yourself realise that if its cheaper to use a Taxi for every trip than using your car due to the massive running costs something is not right. It is bordering on the scale that it would make sense to hire a car over buy it as Ins is included. |

| Re: Insurance renewal time! After reading some of the huuuuuge insurance premiums being paid in the=is thread , I wondered how much I'd be paying if I had a sporty car , instead of a basic one , so Ive been having a play on Direct Line website. All quotes are under the exact same criteria as the quote for my Fabia Comfort (£143) 2005 Fabia vRS - £212 2005 Octavia vRS Mk1 - £294 2007 Octavia vRS TFSi - £294 2007 Octavia vRS TDI - £273 2007 Golf GTI TFSi 3 dr - £316.05 2005 Audi TT Quattro 225 Coupe - £353.85 2007 Mitsubishi Evo IX MRFQ360 - £520.80 (with RAC Trackstar Fitted) 2007 Subaru Impreza STI Type UK 2.5 - £520.80 2007 Porsche 911 (997) Turbo 4WD Coupe - £636.30 (with RAC Trackstar fitted) 2007 Lambourghini Gallardo - unable to quote (!) So I'm pretty sure I could insure anything I ever will want (and can afford) to buy , comforatably under £1000 per annum fully comp.

And of course the additional cost of buying the vehicle - be it cash = loss of interest or loan = interest charge. IIRC on Top gear recently they had to buy super cars and Clarkson made a comment that when he had a Cossie in London (on the streets) he was quoted £21k when the car was worth only £18k. The £2k premiums for the fabias you own represent a huge % of the cars actual value - be this age, your own poor driving history or the post code lottery. Given its so high you may as well buy a 205 1.9GTi on 3PF&T.

?I appreciate what your trying to say but you just don't get it do you. It's the same drive that makes people mod their cars past the point of being economically sound. Because they want to and because they can. Good on them! Why would you want to do that? The Vrs won't require weekly repairs Actually, don't answer that. I might loose £1.25 in VRS depreciation whilst reading it.Last edited by Decron; 31-05-2007 at 19:23.

1 - go on a £7k holiday each year 2 - pay for a years motorsport racing in a lowish class of racing 3 - clear your debts 4 - invest 5 - anything else. It does seem crazy to me & most people I have ever spoken to about it why oh why would you want to waste a fortune on making a car faster & much less reliable & with far higher ins costs when you could have for the same money bought a much fasted cxar in the first place. That age old statement "If you want a fast car buy a fast car in the first place", the suspension/wheels/brakes/esp & reliability will be ideally suited. If you go to France & live there you are not allowed by law to modify the engine in any way (no ECU remaps etc either) all you are allowed to do is improve the brakes and do whatever you like with the exterior. Mind you with the exterior changes I have a big issue here if it is modified exterior it may be much less safe for pedestrians why would any car driver wish to increase the risk of death to others?
