Re: ITS HERE!!!! SHELL V POWER IN THW NW and UK

I've got 'Shell Diesel Extra' available at the Marcham service station, 3p/liter premium over other stuff around in the area but it does make a fuel economy difference and smokes less. They'll switch to V-Power no doubt at some stage soon

Nothing much round here either. The one tank I did try didn't do anything for the car but cost a lot more than Diesel Extra. I'll be going out of my way to stick with the old stuff, rather than pay BP's prices for Shell Diesel.

Re: ITS HERE!!!! SHELL V POWER IN THW NW and UK

Got it nr me (Chester) last week so I filled up. I used to run my petrol on V-Power and got an extra 3-4mpg, so I'm hoping for that with the diesel if not more.

After I'd filled up the trip computer told me I had 585 miles left in my tank! Normally after a brimming refill it says 515.

Interesting Mr Bond . . .

Nearest one selling V-Power is over 50 miles away, and I don't know where Diesel Extra is sold (can't find it on the Shell website!)

Re: ITS HERE!!!! SHELL V POWER IN THW NW and UK

Have got some V-Power in the Octy (pump with normal Unleaded was out of use and I was in a hurry) - no noticeable difference, fuel economy not improved and car doesn't run any smoother.
Wouldn't really expect it to though...

Rob.
I think the official Shell line is that it takes a few tankfuls to take effect. They would say that though wouldn't they! But you'll probably need 2-3 tanks to remove the non V-Power in there...

Re: ITS HERE!!!! SHELL V POWER IN THW NW and UK

They said similar things about Optimax, but all I ever noticed with that when I did three tanks of it was a funny sulphurous smell at times...
That said, my fuel flap says 91/95 on it and not 95/98, so suspect it's designed to handle cheap poor fuel rather than perform better on the good stuff!

Yep and with 1500 miles of V-Power you'll have forgotten what the old stuff was like

Re: ITS HERE!!!! SHELL V POWER IN THW NW and UK

Is there any scientific evidence that the more expensive disels such as V-Power make any difference at all to any type of car?

If you use V-Power in a 'normal' petrol car like a Jazz or Polo then I doubt you will see any gains in either mpg or increased power. But I imagine there would be fewer engine deposits - not that you will ever know unless you take it apart.

But with performance petrol cars like the Type Rs and Imprezas/EVOs etc then there will be a difference because these have performance engines that really need Super Unleaded (RON 97) to start with.

I'll let you know with a diesel when I fill up again, but I expect some improvement! And it would DEFINITELY help cars that have been remapped because of the anti-detonation qualities.

Is it worth the expense?

Probably not unless one of these is true for you:

(a) you have a remapped car (or are expecting to have it remapped soon)
(b) you are going to keep your car for at least 100,000 miles (so the fewer deposits will be useful)
(c) you want more mpg (at extra cost)

EVO magazine did a feature on V-Power petrol last year for a BMW and a GTI (and another car I can't remember) and found it led to better power and mpg, especially for turbo cars. I *think* they also took the BMW engine apart after 20,000 miles or so and DID find reduced deposits.

So overall (as someone who used V-Power petrol for 5 yrs) I do think it's worth it, especially as I fit (c) and (b) and will soon fit (a).

Re: ITS HERE!!!! SHELL V POWER IN THW NW and UK

Well FAb Vrs what a reply, exactly what I wanted to hear, bravo, I will continue using the diesel in every tank, (have been doing so for a year in Madrid and it is illegal to remap a car here ) as I want the car to last as long as possible and do a high mileage per year, I intend to drive this car until it dies. Thanks again.

Are diesel cars prone to det'ing then?

I'm also not sure I believe that it will prolong the life of an engine either - sounds like marketing hype to me as there are just waaaaaaaaay too many variables along the way to 100k to make any sort of guarantee like that.....

Still, you pay's your money

If they're going to charge 99p + per litre I think I'll stick to the old diesel extra with a dash of Millers
