Making my intake bigger...

Ok, yet another "power hungry" thread with regard to my frankly slow 1.4 MPi. As some of you know, i have gone against the views of most on the remap front and it's being taken to Jabba on the 26th April. I have been told that to get the best from the 'map a free flow air filter with a bigger intake could help. I already have the free flow filter, care of K&N.I'm not entirely sure buy I think the airbox on a 1.4 MPi is the same as that on a VRS (a kind of triangular shape?). Is it possible to get a bigger intake to allow more air into the engine? I don't really want to have to fiddle around with hoses or cheap intake kits, just a different PD intake? Would that be available?

Cheers guys... no mention of the girlfriend just yet...

Duggie.

Re: Making my intake bigger...

Oh Duggie Duggie Duggie lol Throttle bodies the bit where all the air goes into. It has a wee flap or "butterfly" that opens n closes when the throttle is used. Gettin a bigger one lets more air in and give you "more power"
Not sure about the intake pipe on the 1.4 but if u can, try running a PD130 or the PD 160 IF they fit.

Re: Making my intake bigger...

Ok, where can i get these throttle bodies? And where could I get them fitted?
Also, as for an uprated intake, where can i get one of those? I'm clost to a Vw dealer, Skoda dealer and a Seat dealer.

Many thanks,
Duggie.

Re: Making my intake bigger...

Would bother with a remap till you did everything, i.e throttle bodies, port polished, cammed, turbo'd / supercharged

Re: Making my intake bigger...

not sure where u'd get throttle bodies. Contact jabba, awesome etc n see what they can do. The PD intakes can be bought from SEAT but will cost u a bit, think there's some PD160's in the sale section. Failing that mate, pm me n u can try my standard PD130. Dont know if you'll see any improvement.......

Re: Making my intake bigger...

I'd be thinking about just doing the map to smooth power delivery out , I cant see any gains being availible on the 1.4 8V engine without having it to bits and fitting cams , throttle bodies etc , and even then you probably wont get much more than 20 bhp (if that). Its always much cheaper just trading the car in for the most powerful one in the range , than trying to tune a base car for power. Unless you can stretch to an engine swap , that is!

Duggie, I'm not going to tell you not to do this, although as you know I fall into the I wouldn't group.

What I will say is have a long hard think about what you really want to do before you spend the money. If you are going to do a 1.8t save the money and put it towards the conversion.

If you are not I suggest talking to somebody like teflontom, who has done wonders with an old felly engine and will has a lot of knowledge in the area of tuning up N/A engines.

Don't worry about it mate, I'm just saying that i've been posting far too much about improving a 1.4 in terms of power!

Re: Making my intake bigger...

Lots, the 16v is a crossflow engine, plus better breathing due to multi valve design.

Dont get me wrong stuff can be done to the 8v OHV engine, just to get yourself even to the same power as the std 100bhp 16v youf looking at a couple of grand i'd say.

Ok, this may be a lot to ask, but if and when I do decide to go along that route, would be in about a year's time... who'd be up for lending a hand? like a Briskoda team effort... lol

Re: Making my intake bigger...

if you plan to swap for a 1.8t dont spend anything on it now.

you could buy a 1.8t for as little as 600quid..

Re: Making my intake bigger...

Right, here's the problem, my age, i'm 18. Granted i've been driving for one and a half years with no claims or penalty points but my premium last year, all mods declared was £1000. If I drop a 1.8T in there I can't see that amount going down any time soon. For this reason, i'm going to spend a bit on it now and get it up to reasonable power for my driving style (i'n not a boy racer, just like to be able to pull away and overtake quickly).
It would be fantastic to put some faces to the names on the forum, not just at a meet, but doing what we all ike doing best, tinkering. The other reason i'd like to wait for a while is that next year i'm taking a motorsport engineering degree, might allow me to know what i'm talking about if this goes ahead... lol.
Ultimately, i'd love to keep this car for a long time and turn it into a true one off, nice engine, brakes, etc... if people are willing to help that would be awesome!
