| Stage set for Fabia vRS | Auto Express News | News | Auto Express Stage set for Fabia vRS On the face of it, this is a rally special version of Skoda's new Fabia. But the S2000 on the firm's Geneva show stand had a lot more to it than that By Ross Pinnock 15th March 2007 Rally version of new Fabia gets flared arches and a rear spoiler which could appear on firm’s next vRS The competition car's more aggres*sive styling gives a clear indication of how a sporty Fabia vRS will look when it goes on sale next year. Regular models hit showrooms in May, but the performance version won't arrive until 2008. The previous rally variant previewed the original vRS's features, so when the new hot model arrives, we can expect to see details such as the S2000's front bumper and rear spoiler. The bonnet vents and exten*ded arches may also make production. And there's more good news for fans of the Fabia hot hatch, because bosses are rumoured to be planning a petrol version for the first time. The outgoing car is only available with a 130bhp 1.9-litre diesel, but its replace*ment is likely to emulate the larger Octavia vRS by getting both petrol and oil-burning motors. Volks*wagen's turbo and supercharged 140bhp 1.4-litre TSI engine is the most likely power*plant to be fitted. Also on the Czech manufacturer's display was a Fabia colour concept with black paintwork, a contrasting silver roof and matching door mirrors. The brand has already confirmed it will offer a MINI-style white roof as an optional extra on its new model, but the smart show car paves the way for a wider pallet of colours to be made available. Opting for a white roof will cost around £300 - but that's not all buyers will be able to do to personalise their car. As reported in Auto Express last week (Newsweek, Issue 951) they will also get the chance to mount enlarged photos on the roof. And Skoda is rumoured to be con*sidering a new range of off-the-shelf decals in another move inspired by the big-selling MINI range. |

You're right, about the golf, I had a go in the golf gt, power delivery is strange, does not feel like 170bhp either. For the small amount of extra money the GTI is soooo much better. Think I'd go for the derv fabia if this is on offer

| According to Jezza, it's as smooth as falling down stairs whilst wearing leg braces. In all honesty I can't see a diddy little 1.4 being force fed air through both a supercharger and a turbocharger being smooth. It''ll be racious and stressed.

| Even if it isnt, a lot will depend on the curb weight too IMHO ![]() No doubt as per Octavia Mk2 vs Mk1 when it first came out, people will probably end up liking it. It may not be the same people that liked the Mk1 though, but still. Will see at the time ![]()

| Nope - it was in reference to the Tsi engine. Car looks to be lighter then the current model, by about 100kgs for the petrols.

| I have driven both versions of the Golf GT :- 1) The 170 Diesel is a cracking engine , it feels just like the furby engine, the kick of torque when the turbo comes in for me is better than the smooth delivery of the 140 Diesel. 2) The TSi engine seems just to lack that X factor in a car the size of a Golf, it would suit the smaller Furby/Polo. The delivery was smooth like the 140 diesel, but actually felt like it was a 115 diesel in the larger body. The one thing I find strange, is getting my head around paying 18K for a 1.4 car.

VW have a cracking engine in the 2.0 T FSI and they have some good diesels to. I suppose the TSI offer ok economy with good performance but it's a uninspiring, the power delivery isn't smooth (I disagree with the above) and it does not feel fast (not the same amount of torque as the derv or 2.0T possibly??) Don't agree with the above, new fabia won't be that much lighter than the Golf and I doubt that it will have the 170 application of the TSI. So it could offer the same problems as the golf I just hope they do a derv as otherwise I'll look someone else for my next car (perhaps a second hand MK5 GTI )

| That TSI engine does look good on paper, with a Turbo and supercharger it will be lag free. I agree with you guys at £18k whats the point when a GTI golf can be had for that on the net. It is small so I expect light, and this would be good in the Fabia. Maybe Skoda will be able to make a Fabia VRS that handles!! ![]() |

FYI Car GT 140 BHP 140 Torque 162lbf CO2 169g/Kg Tax 24% annual cost £733 Tax 40% annual cost £1334 Car GT 170 BHO 170 Torque 177lbf CO2 174g/kg Tax 24% annual cost £845 Tax 40% annual cost £1536 Ins Group 16 Car GTI BHP 200 Torque 207 CO2 189g/kg Tax 24% annual cost £1086 Tax 40% annual cost £1976 Ins Group 17 So as you can see this tax reasons are why such a car exists the customer demands more power with a more efficient engine in the real world driving in most situations there will be little difference between the GT170 & GTi however by choosing the GTI your paying either £241 or £440 a year more on Tax for the pleasure of having 30more HP and then of course you have the higher Insurance costs | |
