Re: Pass my driving test,

That's one of the things that you'll get used to as you drive more cars - each one is different and it's very easy to over or under-rev an engine or get the clutch wrong and stall.

With a bit more experience that'll get a lot easier to pick up as you drive other vehicles.

Anyway , congrats on the pass , it's a good feeling , isn't it.

Re: Pass my driving test,

If you haven't done so I'd recommend some Pass Plus lessons as it'll help with insurance and also allow you to drive in unfamiliar conditions with an instructor beside you

I'm also not convinced by the P-plates, but I guess that's up to you. I liked to be thrown in at the deep end once I'd passed!

I agree with you Chris, I don't really see the point of the ' P ' either!!!

Maybe the idiots who drive around in their Chavy Corsa's with their mates should have ' P ' Plates, but it wouldn't stand for Passed!!!

Cheers

Re: Pass my driving test,

Well done for passing buddy. I had the "P" plates for i think a whole 12 hours! there was one truck that tail gated me because of it ....i think. but most other drivers gave me a bit of space, and didnt huff and puff if i stalled! and my mum wouldntlet me take them off. but i said they "fell off" in the end

cant beleive its been 2 years this month since i passed my test!! wooow! time flys!

enjoy your freedom!

Re: Pass my driving test,

Congrats. Can't believe it was about a month and a decade ago that I passed my test. 23/07/1996 - Oh wait, that's 11 years. Sad I can remember the date. I sometimes still feel I'm learning to drive now - It never really stops. I wish I'd done pass-plus - It really gives new drivers a good headstart into their driving careers.

You have to remember on slip lanes the traffic already on the motorway/dual carriageway has right of way and you are attempting to filter smoothly into it. What you have to aim to do is match your speed to a gap that you can slot in, rather than trying to get up to motorway speeds and hope that there's a gap. Sadly lorries don't always yield, because if they lose speed it takes them a while to regain it, or leave big gaps (and are fecking big so you don't wanna chance an accident!) so it's always worth an early look when you join the slip road so you can decide what speed you need to be at to blend in and then how much acceleration you need to achieve that.....

Re: Pass my driving test,

Congrats on passing , take it easy for the 1st few months till yu get the hang of everything! Its a great feeling being able to get away in the car yourself for the 1st time , eh? I can still remember how good that felt , and I passed in 1987!

Re: Pass my driving test,

Congrats

You'll have got the 2 minors for the TIR if you took 5 points but it was easily achieveable in 3, as any reversing manoevre is classed as dangerous and thus taking more time than necessary makes it more so and is as such a driving fault.

The guy above is correct on the slip road scenario. Match speed to a gap, and if there isn't one slow down and look further back for the next one.

If people tailgate you, slow down to give yourself and the idiot behind more reaction time in the event of an emergency.

On roundabouts, if you consider that you will be approaching it in the 6 o'clock position anything beyond 12 o'clock requires you to be in the right hand lane unless signs state otherwise. It is always easier to emerge onto a roundabout from the left lane as you don't have to cross a lane to get where you want to be, but you should not change lanes on a roundabout until you are actually leaving it. Going all the way 'round in the left is dangerous and inconsiderate to others.

Been there, done that. Thought i was the best driver in the world. Took an accident to get me to slow down and drive normally...

Luckily enough, it was only a small bump, and i paid for the damage out of my own pocket, so not affecting my no-claims...

Sh*t my pants big time, but i learned a valuable lesson from it

Re: Pass my driving test,

agree with the comments about roundabouts and lane position and also about slip roads. in theory the lorry should have moved over and changed lanes to allow you you space to join but it just doesent always happen.

the only thing im not sure about is this turn in the road you did. got me test next month and all the research ive been doing online about it as said, for the simple reason its not refered to as the 3 point turn by instructors is because you can do more than 3 points. any more than 5 though is considered that you dont have the required skill and control needed. and your also aloud to let the car touch the kerb apparently but not with any force or mount it. i wouldent want to touch the kerb anyway if not for the test then the paint job. although that one does seem debatable

Re: Pass my driving test,

No limit on the number of points, it's relative to the width of the road being used. Ideally you would choose a sutably wide road to attempt, but in an emergency situation you might not have that choice. An examiner will always use a road on the test route that is perfectly suitable for 3 points, and so the inability to do it in 3 is a driver fault. You should not touch the kerb at all (at any point during the test), in fact no point of your car should even overhang it as a high kerb might damage your car and there could be a small child at the edge of the pavement you have not seen. To qualify this, I am a driving instructor.
