| Performance same with/without MAF hi guys, following on from my recent thread of poor mpg, i today tested my car driving it with the air flow sensor connected and disconnected. The car beahved pretty much the same. The car is quick with the MAF connected and is pretty much the same with it disconnected. Drove it up a very steep hill with it disconnected and it went like a rocket. I read somewhere that with the MAF disconnected it should have the performance of a SDI but I can honestly say the car went wll in both situations. Is the MAF faulty or what Car was booked in at VW for poor MPG, came back with no fault found, could be driver style I was told. Told them even if I drive like a saint I dont get 260 miles, just told me to book it in again if it continues. WTF should I do? fuel is costing me a fortune. Cheers |

We had a similar issue with our company VW LT35 TDI. The MAF had failed which resulted in high fuel consumption and very lack-lustre performance. I confirmed the diagnosis by unplugging the MAF which had zero affect on performance. Once I'd replaced the faulty MAF, both performance and economy were fully restored.

| Re: Performance same with/without MAF could anyone point me towards a thread or even a picture of where the MAF is? or what it looks like? I've had mine replaced already for a different fault and i think the new one was DOA. I would like to pull mine out and see how it goes, doing so for a long period of time wouldnt do any harm to the car would it? its a 01 1.6i octavia mk1. any info would be greatly appreciated. | Re: Performance same with/without MAF I bought, from eBay for £25 and fitted a generic MAF after my 1.9tdi slowed to a crawl. I think that the output readings from this new MAF are such that they fool the ECU into thinking there's more air passing through than there is, as I have noticed two things. (1) A definite increase in performance and (2) A small decrease in MPG! This is the new re-map for no money! ![]() ![]() ![]()

| Re: Performance same with/without MAF Ah if it's a petrol 1.6 i'd be looking else where for the problem, MAFs have a much bigger affect or turbo charged cars than they would on an NA 1.6

| Re: Performance same with/without MAF Drinking diesel could be a result of a faulty EGR valve. It happened to mine and it was very thirsty. |
