Revs drop when fan kicks in..

When stationary with the engine just ticking over and the radiator fan kicks in the rev's drop by about 100rpm with a small shudder, just for a split second. Is this normal for the vRS?

In my last car you couldn't tell when the fan came on....

Re: Revs drop when fan kicks in..

It's putting load on the alternator and hence, the engine. Perfectly normal.

Thought so, i knew that it'd be down the the extra load on the alternator, its just that in my CTR when the fan came on nothing happened (no drop in rev's, dimming lights or anything).... maybe that didn't put as much load on it...

i would have said that it wouln't make much difference when the fan comes on! i would check the battery/alternator to check it is charging properly

Re: Revs drop when fan kicks in..

Try running with the Aircon on, that should switch the fans on permanently.

I never switch the AC off! That won't make the fan for the coolant stay on though.... that'd be daft.

Its probably fine, think i'm just a little paranoid cos its new.....

Even the fan for the coolant??? That doesn't make any sense?? I thought it'd just be the can for the AC....

I would've thought so too - on mine, there are two fans, one which runs with the air-conditioning, and one which runs for the coolant when the engine temperature rises.

Fun afternoon that was, I can tell you...

Re: Revs drop when fan kicks in..

the rad for the aircon is infront of the engine rad so how can they have different fans

and don;'t worry about it every car i've had has done this

press two electric window buttons at the same time, has the same effect

Not too each other...they run independently.

Unless it's just a peculiarity of the engine I've got...or the car (not beyond the realms of possiblity )...

Independant fans, both on the rear of the radiator (tut tut Bengie).

Re: Revs drop when fan kicks in..

on the octavia vrs, both fans should run all the time with the a/c on. The fact that the air is also passed over the coolant rad to get to the condensor shouldnt be a problem if the thermostat is doing its job because no water will flow through the rad if cooling is not required. They are switched from the same source, so if only one is going then the chances are one of the motors has seized/ burnt out. This happened to Jon at the ring, and his car was fine until pressed hard then it overheated with just one fan working.
