Anything from a DIY made-in-a-shed item to the authentic Ross Tech. item should be fine. However the cheapo ones tend not to work with anything but the old version of the software (however some do work with the very latest, allegedly)

To be slightly clearer your car does not require CANBUS.

So as Phil says one of the cheapo Ebay ones will be fine but you will have limited functionality using Demo Software.

You can, however, find third party cables which do support CANBUS and the latest versions of VAG-COM - some even act as a dongle for the registration - apparently

However, using such a cable is naughty and if you do so you're a bad man

Quite right we shouldn't condone such actions.

It is a worthy note that if buying genuine then they can be cheaper by ordering from the US especially with a favourable exchange rate. I got mine from the US without problem.
