vag power box thing?!

a mate just offered me a vag power box thing that came dircet from audi.

it has a male and a female socket and a plastic loop from whick to secure it with.

i thought it would plug in the serial post when first he told me about it,

but aparently it sould go in between the sensor thats plugged in just after the airbox (between it and the engine itself.)

only problem is that the box has 8holes for the metal prongs and the sensor socket only has 4 prongs.

it came off a diesel leon, so i presumed it would be ok grrrr!

can anyone tell me what the fook the thing is and if their good? if it would fit in any way and what gains you would see?

cheers!

Re: vag power box thing?!

That picture is a TDi not a PD engine, so I'm assuming it's a random picture you've found.

I think it'll more likely be on the fuel temp sensor in this area (on a PD) shown with the square box -

Re: vag power box thing?!

The more I read your post the more I'm confused. You say it has '8 holes', do you mean 8 pins for the connector? Is it a round connector.

The edit I made to your pcture above would be a 2 pin connector on a PD so it's probably not that.

You'll need to show us a picture of the device.

Re: vag power box thing?!

if its like a Dragon box , the connectors will round , with 5 pins in , but with more holes for pins available in the connector

Re: vag power box thing?!

Sounds like a tuning box to me and is not something that would be supplied or approved by any of the VAG manufacturers

Re: vag power box thing?!

ill try get a picture of it.

the box itself has both a male and a female (8 holes,8pins)

and the shape of the slot itself matches the shape of where i tried it on the vrs (4 holes,4pins)

im open to the idea i had it in the wrong place as its honesly the first time ive seen anything like it.

apparently there is a screw you turn on the box that changes its settings pd130,10 etc.

just rang my mate, he says it has the following code on it, but thats as much as ill be able to get till tomorrow.

1j0973335

dont know if it will help at all..... google here we come!

i wouldnt have thought so, but ive seen the audi and vw badge are actually in the plastic, as in are molded from the plastic on the box.

The connectors themselves may be VAG OEM, but the box of electronics wont.

Does it look like this?

If it is, you need to screw it into the side of the engine block here (and wire up to battery):

Re: vag power box thing?!

nope, doesnt look like that. the shape of the connection matches that of where i circled in the abouve picture.

rectangle with a rounded side.

and the box itself does have audi and vw stamped into it.

Re: vag power box thing?!

It's stamped with the Audi badge but it ain't an Audi accessory. It's a resistor mod tuning box and they turn up regularly on ebay and plug into the fuel temp sensor.....

Re: vag power box thing?!

aah .. the EVRY mod.

check out this link:

EVRY Mod

Its's just a resistor in a box.

The main gains would be soot I would think

The mod just tricks the engine into using permanent choke (so more fuel/rich mixture).

Re: vag power box thing?!

You'll get a lot more power, but you might find it'll confuse the ECU if the fuel temp sensor readings go out of range and you get a CEL up. Easy enough to clear with VAG-COM.

I ran something similar for 30k miles with no issues whatsoever and it sailed through its MOT (on emissions anyway!). Best bang for buck mod I did on my car and no probs with soot on mine

Re: vag power box thing?!

The soot comment was sarcastic.

It does work, but it is a bit of a sledge-hammer vs nut style solution.

Not very elegant.

As you say, best bang for buck (unless you try and fit it to a new DPF equiped car, then the bang you get might not be the one what you were after)

That does of course also depend on how much you paid - a few quid OK
100 squid+ - whoops

Technically of course, it might not supply any more fuel in the winter, when the engine is cold, only on warmer days or when the engine has warmed up fully.

I agree that they work...

I had one running on an Audi A2 1.4 TDI for years...with no problems, lots more power and sadly a fair bit more smoke.

I tried it on my vRS and it certainly gave more power...very noticably more...but also geve the expected extra smoke, and for some reason a rough idle.
I removed it and the idle has been fine...
I may try it again though.

Re: vag power box thing?!

hmmm, suppose it could be one of those, the botom pic on the link:

EVRY Mod

is the slot it goes into, but the box does seem mass made (proper connectors) instead of home made, but i guess some folks will be doing it commercially.

didnt think you could affect the flow rate of diesel engines, thought that the fuel was always technically at 'full throttle' at all times.

Re: vag power box thing?!

But modern diesels have computer controlled injectors, not like the old "governor" controlled engines.

Yep, but they're controlled by the ECU based on the feedback it gets from sensors. Monkey with the values the sensor sends, and you can indirectly alter fuelling
