Just been on the spine road in northumberland, WRX fully loaded with chavs right behind me, I mean RIGHT behind. Got to roundabout and got into 2nd gear. Then he decided that he was going to go pastme, or so he thought. As soon as I saw him going for it, I accelerated and had to change gear. Bloody short power band Then when he was level he could not seem to get any further he looked like has was trying aswell. I had a look and his mates were looking at my car like, what the hell is that, he then proceeded to slow down and get back behind me. I had a grin all the way back home.
So here are my theorys, he was a crap driver his car was full of people mine wasn't or the mid range power band in a Vrs that is remapped maybe very good. Or it could be all of these. the choice i leave up to you guys.
By the way anyone else with any "suprising stories"

TBH a WRX should really have crucified you. The old 'classic' jap import WRX is 240-265bhp standard depending on the model. If it's a newer UK WRX then they have even less power as standard and are a bit heavier.

My guess is he didn't change down in time and was stuck in too high a gear, that and the added weight of a car full of people will kill the roll-on acceleration. You need to get a turbo scooby wound up to at least 3500rpm to get the turbo on song and full power, whereas a vRS has lots of torque way below that.

To be honest the "surprise element" is worth a good 20bhp or so, I can beat 225 TT's and S3's from the lights easily despite being nearly identical power, as they never expect it and by the time they have reacted, it's too late....

My brothers Clio 172 can keep pace with a WRX SportsWagen or whatever they are called to about 90 mph where the WRX would start to pull away, but working on that premise a custom remapped Fabia vRS which I believe will have the same 0-60, 0-100 times as a 172, you should be able to keep pace with a WRX (UK Bugeye & beyond) or only loose a car length or so.

Obviously, there are so many versions of the Impreza, and 90% of them will blow you away, but I do believe it would be possible in certain circumstances, and before everyone links to my post let me just re-itterate I know most are much faster than a 1.9 PD 130 vRS, just thought i'd give my penny's worth...

I know what you mean about the different variations, I have went against a lot of imprezzas and the fail rate is higher than the success, but it is nice when you pull up and they make a point of stopping even if they weren't to ask you what you are running under your bonnet and they hear the diesel. it just amuses me when they realise. DIESEL POWER!!!!!!

A V reg UK car would be running about 215bhp standard and maybe 235bhp if he had the prodrive performance pack fitted. Standard they should be able to do 0-60mph in about 5.5s and go on to nearly 140mph.

I guess you caught him unawares.

Before we got the Fabia I had a Golf GT TDI 130 (tuning boxed to 170bhp).

Once tried to keep up with an old shape Scoob when the road turned into a dual carriageway...no chance!!!

I flogged the Golf and bought an (admittedly slower as standard) new shape Scoob.

We are now in the fortunate position to have a Fabia vRS as well as the Scoob - make no mistake, all things being equal, the Scoob WILL win.

The chavs probably underestimated the Fab, didn't drop a gear and looked daft in the equation

Don't forget power to weight... the good thing about the vRS is that it feels so responsive compared to old (scoob) petrol technology - it's very easy to get the drop on a lot of cars.

WARNING!! WRX are not the fastest cars in the world.
When i had my MY03 WRX fitted with PPP (Prodrive Performance Pack) I had 261bhp under my right foot. 0-60 of 4.8 secs. 0-100 of 13 secs. There are only a few cars that would maybe worry me.... New M3, Evo's, other Scoobys.
Had great time playing with F355's, Boxster's.
I now drive an MY03 Octavia vRS, which i love....but the traction out of corners is poor comparing it to the awd of the wrx.
My WRX in 5th Gear would slowly gain on my vRS going through the gears from 70mph.So a change down to 3rd would take me easliy past.

perhaps he was annoyed as i get when you go to overtake someone and they then decide you aren't allowed to come passed,unless it was a dual carrageway i'd say he saw sense and pulled back in.

I tried my friends bog standard Scoob at the weekend and in the corners it was lovely - you could really boot it hard coming out! but in gear it seems like a stiff old man - like the gearbox and diffs sucked all the go out of it! It is slightly faster than my Octy Vrs but only cos off the line it has more traction, then I start gaining on him, was certainly interesting to try out though!!!

Also remember that despite having 208-225bhp, it will have something like 70-80bhp losses at the wheels due to the permanent all wheel drive. Typically a FWD car drops about 20bhp at the wheels so with a chipped Fabia and a standard Scoob, there wouldn't be too much in it.

In the corners, the Scoob would be much faster but that's mainly due to massive grip, rather than good handling. A Scoob that's been breathed on by Eibach will be even faster

Oh, and don't forget the turbo lag if he didn't drop a gear

I went up against an WRX STI, I had 2 people in my car including me and he did pull away just, saying that I had AMD to help me out ! Must remember Diesel 0-60 = Bad / In gear = Good

I know but Mr AMD helped out. It was a traffic light grandprix but as we all know the Fabia is sh*te at these. I was informed the following which kinda made sense.

Sti = 260bhp ish - 4 wheel drive loss = 210 ish !
Fabia = 130 + AMD = 180 ish plus bags of torque

So not a total kill by the scoob as I would of thought, I just gave it a try, I knew I would loose but by how much suprised me. Now the Normal WRX is easy pickings with Mr AMD
