Talking Want to horribly de-gut my cat.....

Sounds rather vicious eh?
Thinking about taking off my downpipe/cat and taking an 8mm 2.5 foot long masonry drill to the insides....

Is it a simple matter of undoing some bolts to get the cat out or is it a slash-and-cut job?

I read a post somewhere that after you do this, you get an initial blast of smoke as the increased airflow knocks out the carbon, but it shouldn't make the usual idling/cruising exhaust any smokier?

Advice/opinions/comments/lewd suggestions welcomed.....

Cheers
Bas

Re: Want to horribly de-gut my cat.....

surely you could easily get a straight bit of pipe to replace it?

whats the point though really?

might aswell just get a full turbo back exhaust system if you want any kind of performance gain.

Re: Want to horribly de-gut my cat.....

Agreed - but figure the cost of a turbo-back system with shipping out to the middle of nowhere, and you'll see the allure of a nice DIY jobbie......

It really is the slippery road to a straight pipe system (ala Jason) but in a logical (???) progression.

Is it difficult to unbolt the offending section of pipe?

Basil, do you actually need an exhaust sytem were you live? Could you not just
remove it from the turbo back?

Re: Want to horribly de-gut my cat.....

IF you have to do it this way - get yourself some good bit of pipe with good clamps to go over the exhaust where you cut it. Chop it just below the cat, then undo the three bolts on the turbo / manifold, above the downpipe (tricky to get to IIRC - might be easier from underneath or from the top - not sure) Actually might not need to unbolt it here. You might be able to undo one of the exhaust hangers and bend it down enough.

Then, attack the honeycomb from the tailpipe side you chopped through, and run the engine a bit to blow it all out (it might sound nice and fruity ) Then put the clamp over the exhaust on the tailpipe side, slide right down, push the empty cat section back in line, and put the clamp over it 50:50 to rejoin. (or just weld it if you know someone, or can weld?)

Personally I would use a decat pipe similar to the one I had. Link to folder below.

What does removing/mutilating the cat do to the emissions?
Will the car pass the MOT?

CAT is not required for MOT, as long as it still passes the opacity test your fine.

What the wise one said. Mine's got through 2 MOTs with nothing more than basically a scaffold pole for an exhaust.
