What tools do I need to change my brake pads?

Have never done any maintenance aside from one oil change on my old car. However I think my brother got charged quite a lot when he needed new pads, so I'm thinking of doing it myself (especially with expense of a service looming!). I'd imagine it's easy enough to do, but I have no tools so will need to purchase some. Could someone tell me what size tools you need to change these please? I am thinking of maybe just buying a whole toolkit but tbh I wont use them very much and I'm a bit skint!

Re: What tools do I need to change my brake pads?

Front you need a 12mm socket

Rear you need the socket(cant remember if its the same size) and a wind back tool Tools in Stock, UK, selling Draper Tools, Sealey Tools, Laser, Gunson and Kamasa hand tools and power tools - air power tools, air tools accessories, body shop, compressors, electric power, electrical and plumbing, engineering tools, garage and works which you can get from halfrauds for just over a tenner, a cheap metric spanner/socket set should see you ok, but remember with tools you get what you pay for

some copperslip comes in handy too

agree , a 12mm spanner/socket , plus something to push the piston back into the caliper , i use a large set of grips at work , a G-clamp would work i would imagine

If you have a 100bhp Fabia I cant see what use a 12mm socket would be???

7mm allen key, g clamp or large water pump pliers, wire brush and tools to get the wheel off should be about all you need.

ah , yes , of course you are correct not an excuse , but i've never seen 100hp brakes , just assumed they had the same caliper type as the VRS

Nope, FSIII brakes, hence not being able to fit the vRS brakes to the lesser Fabia models without changing the carriers etc.

Re: What tools do I need to change my brake pads?

personally I feel that if someone has never done pad replacement and needs to ask what tools are required they should get someone who knows what they are doing to show them how to do it. the old rule see one, teach one, do one. pads are not hard if you know what you are doing but since they are a life or crash/death important, not something to play with if you dont.

just stay safe

Re: What tools do I need to change my brake pads?

well , if your a bit skint - get yourself a set of torx keys out the pound shop and a g clamp and a haynes manual , the pads and have a go - thats how you learn - we would be still living in caves else -

best of luck

Re: What tools do I need to change my brake pads?

I'll take it round my dads and get a helping hand that way I think! He knows his way around a car well enough.

Thanks for the many replies and sorry for the confusion. If I mentioned buying a VRS before it was probably to do with my work's company car fleet.
