Fabia 1 vs Hyundai Getz - Auto Express

In this weeks Auto express they test the new base Fabia against the base Getz 1.1 , and the Fabia wins! The article is availible on the Auto Express website I think. Auto Express - Car Reviews – Car News – New & Used Cars Review - Car Magazine , and look in the section 'New Reviews'.
They seem to like the Fabia , even as a base (the car pictured in the article , in the best traditions of press cars , wasnt a 'true' base model though , as it had 15" alloys and met paint options , bringing the price as tested up to around £8500)

Some quotes " With these talents , and a £7990 price tag , the Fabia seems to be excellent value in entry-level trim"

" The 1.2 litre 3 cylinder petrol engine has real character , and with its safe handling and accurate steering , the Fabia 1 is dynamically superior to the Getz"

"With a price tag of £7990 , th model's robust construction , nicely laid out cabin and well engineered mechanicals stand out from its budget rivals"

Not a bad effort for a base!

Also noticed they got the 6v 1.2 from 0-60 in 14.8s (1.7s quicker than Skoda quote) which bodes well for the nipiness of the 12v version

Fabia vs Getz...

I'd hardly say a challenge myself, as I would expect the fabia to easily surpass the getz. If for no other reason than the getz is an older design.

Yes , that is eluded to in the article. I think the Getz is around 5 years old now. I supose its a valid comparison of 2 cheap hatchbacks that are quite close on price (the Getz is £15 more expensive than the Fabia!) The average 'non enthusiast' probably knows that the Fabia is a new car , but does not know how old the Getz is , and will probably be basing their purchase descision on price/comfort/equipment etc rather than age of design.

Had a look at this article today- had some engine bay pics (Done far too small), to my mind the Fabia engine looks a bit retro - theres no engine cover (Suppose thats done to cut costs) Oil filter/alternator have the same arrangement. Edit - would like to see the 12v version

I'm not sure Skoda fit engine covers to any of their cars now , I see theres none on the vRS SE Fabia.

The Getz was launched in 2003, so it's 4 years old. It's easily better than the original Fabia, but yes is probably lossing ground to the new one. I havent driven a new Fabia yet but the Getz is good

Daughter of step as a 2 year old Getz and i disagree, would say the build quality, fit finnish and materials, let alone the drive is no were as good as the fabia of the same age. In her case it was the price tag (2nd hand), and warrenty that swung it.

Would that be a pre-facelift as they are very, very different build quality wise. Comfort and handling on the Getz is way better than my Fabia. It's also worth pointing out that a Getz has never broken down at the roadside, the same certainly can't be said for the Fabia

Pricing for the Getz isn't cheap, but please find me a brand new Fabia with,

Leather Seats and Doors
Air Con and Electric Sunroof
Electric Mirrors
Automatic Transmission
All Round electric Windows
Remote Central Locking and Alarm
Parking Sensors
A 5 Year Warranty

for £10,750
