Re: make it faster!

Do a search on Shifty's (Dave's) car for interior pics and search for posts by Jase - he's gone as far as humanly possible in that department......

Rear spare tyre + remove back seats would give you a nice weight loss.....

Re: make it faster!

tbh that figure sounds way to high, what car is it exactly that you have?

parkers has a 105 1.9tdi fabia 2 weighing in at 1170Kg

Re: make it faster!

Kerb weight or total weight?

eg Roomster 1.9tdi Kerb = 1255 kg Total = 1770 kg

I reckon you are looking at total weight in the skud brochure old boy

Edit , on reading your post, you are using total weight, that's essentially the max weight of the fully laden vehicle, you need to look at kerb weight plus yo ***!!!

and then get it mapped

Re: make it faster!

You will save a bit of weight by not filling up with fuel and also stop eating and drinking for a while.
In reality you are driving a Skoda not an F1 racing car. A slight bit of weight loss will not make that much difference.

Re: make it faster!

stripped the boot, rear seats and mats. to be honest the only part that weighs anything substantial are the back of the seats and the spare wheel. the back end seems to be a lot more twitchy. really dont like it! gonna put it all back it and just save for the remap!

Re: make it faster!

How on earth do you get affordable insurance on that car at 18? If you start tinkering and don't tell your insurance company it could all end in tears. Leave as is until you've got some claim free years under your belt (assuming you're in the UK of course).

Seriously though, accident risk is sky high for young males in the 18-20 age group, and passing the test first time isn't necessarily a good indicator of a good driver. The main factor is of course inexperience as all newly qualified drivers are at greater risk.

really?

so a 130bhp car weighing 1300Kg can lose say 100Kg in seats/spare tyre etc etc which brings its bhp/ton from 100bhp/ton to 108bhp/ton which is equivelnt to gaining 10bhp at standard weight by spending nothing

I think it's an often overlooked alternative to engine tweaking. Assuming the weight balance is considered, shaving 10% off the kerb weight will not only benefit acceleration, but braking and probably handling too.

Re: make it faster!

as regards to my insurance. im with direct line so i can build up some no claims. i drove my old octavia 1.6 for about 8 months on my dads insurance (me as named driver and 3rd party). price was about 1500 quid!!! for my 1.9 sport im paying 1100. originally priced up insurance for a 1.25 fiesta. cheapest we got was 1300. so after about 3 seconds of consideration decided to keep the octy! and yes jo, your right, id say atleast 5 of my mates have smashed up their cars. i passed my test 3rd time! my dads a wagon driver so he took me on the motorway going off and on at every junction. pain in the **** but to be honest its well needed!

I agree there's no doubt to benefits of keeping your car light, but should not overdo it! Most stuff that can be removed/lightened eg spare wheel, rear seats and fuel are at the back, potentially changing the weight distribution beyond acceptable limits. This can have negative and even dangerous effects on ride and handling, as well as noise. If anything the rear suspension is designed to cope with extra weight in the form of bootload.
