Thumbs down Engine stops suddenly with no apparent reason

Hello,

I'm from Denmark and new to this forum. I hope, however, that I've come to the right place.

About a month ago, me and my girlfriend bought a Skoda Felicia 1995, 1,3 LX with a nice sunroof. Everything about it was really great, but on the way home from the dealer, the motor started acting funny. Since I'm not a mechanic, all I can say is that it didn't react at all to pedal-movement, so I couldn't keep it running.

I could turn on the engine again, and it would run for 2-3 seconds before going out again. This saved me from having to exit the middle of a crossing by pushing it. I called a friend who's a mechanic, but he didn't have a clue. Then, about 10 minutes after, I could go along great...for about 10 minutes. Then it stopped again.

I thought it might be the engine getting warm, so I changed the thermostat, checked the coolant, oil, and blower. Everything is ok, and it doesn't go above 110 celcius.

I renewed the plugs (despite seeming quite new and clean) and the airfilter. It ran fine for about 50km, broke down again, and then stopped breaking down for about three weeks. We've been on long trips, short trips, mixes, no probs.. and now it's doing it again.

I've talked to loads of non-specialist mechanics, but they all say it's fine. Since the problem mostly occours after having been driving a long distance at constant speed in 20 minutes, it's hard for them to duplicate.

Any ideas?

Thanks :-)

Re: Engine stops suddenly with no apparent reason

I have an idea, take it back to the dealer, get out the jack from the boot and teach him a lesson, and get your money back, sorry, not very constructive.

Re: Engine stops suddenly with no apparent reason

gilesk: I don't really have that option. Besides, it's seems to be at great condition, so I have a hard time documenting the problem. The problem only occours periodically...

Some Skoda-specialist talked about a power module (tændingsmodul).. I think it's the one creating the ignitition coil thingie... could that be true?

And besides, could this be a damaging perk? I don't mind a little trouble with it now and then, as long as it doesn't damage the motor.

By the way. The motor has gone about 170.000 km which is about 113.000 miles, I think.

I also checked the
- ignition distributor (no dirt or cracks)
- ignition cables (ok, no cracks or anything)

Sounds very much like a faulty crank sensor to me.

Re: Engine stops suddenly with no apparent reason

Fuel pump relay getting warm and going intermittent, possibly even the pump itself.

Re: Engine stops suddenly with no apparent reason

The Skoda specialist did talk about a "hallgiver".. is that the same thing?

Re: Engine stops suddenly with no apparent reason

Right. So I found this in my Haynes book weeks ago:

But when I call my parts dealer, he says it's mounted on the ignition distributor, not on the transmission. Some other dealer did say it was mounted on the transmission, but called it a rotations-sensor. Is that because the Hall-giver is actually measuring the crankshaft rotation in order to syncronize the ignition?

Is the above the discussed part?

It's pretty expensive (about 40£ in danish crowns)... Should I try to check it for dirt first?

And... it's corroded, I think... I haven't managed to pull it out...any tricks? A hammer? Some chemical?

Re: Engine stops suddenly with no apparent reason

there is a little confusion over the name of this sensor, normally a hall sendor is mounted on the distributor. it certainly is on the 1.6 (aee) engine in the felicia. but the 1300cc units have it mounted on the top of the gearbox as in the above picture.

Re: Engine stops suddenly with no apparent reason

i would check the cranksensor, and the fuel pump relay and the pump itself. Try pulling fuse number 4, turning the engine over for atleast 5 seconds to releive fuel pressure (it will not start) and leaving the fuse out overnight.

If it runs better for a few days i would definately suspect fuel system.
