Noise in fifth gear

Just had the middle part of the exhaust replaced and on the way home i noticed that when i accelerate the engine makes a loud whiny noise this only happens in fifth gear and sounds like its coming from the drivers side.

Any thoughts on this ?

Re: Noise in fifth gear

Don't use 5th, the gear retaining nut has come loose, continued use will strip the splines on the shaft and will be expensive. It is not a major job to fix and a new nut is about £5 + new gearbox oil, labour should be 1 to 1.5 hours. It is DIYable.

Re: Noise in fifth gear

Following on from this, I can now say that my brothers car is now fixed. Was in at the skoda dealer on tuesday, cost him about £150 for the repair but at least he has the use of 5th gear again. The problem was as fordfan described the retaining nut.

Now all he needs to do is get a new clutch once he has saved up some pennies again, as apparently this one will soon be knocking on deaths door.

How much torque to use when attaching this retaining nut?

Re: Noise in fifth gear

cant be that much, as if you are removing it, it is because it has already come loose

Re: Noise in fifth gear

i did this job the other week.

your gunna meed some big old spanners, i cant remember the sizes but i know you'll need some bigish ones for the drain plug and the 5th gear nut itself.

you'll also need a second jack, a trolly or bottle type will do. this is used to hold/lift/lower the gear box when you taking the gearbox mount off

once you have the mount/end cover off, you'll be able to see whitch one off not both of the nuts has come a-drift. the nuts cost £7 inc/vat each, and to be on the safe side i would recomend getting two (just in case both have gone)

your gunna need a good pin punch or cold chisle to peen the sholder of the nut and lock it in place.

i also used some gear box casing sealer compound then i put the cover back on. i dont think you really need it bit i did it anyway.

once the box is all back to gether and the mount bolted up. you'll need to re-fill the box with transmition fluid. when stood at the front of the car, and looking at were the speedo drive goes in, on the left of the speedo drive you'll see a little skrew. undo this skrew and slide out the falk shaped retaining plate. the speedo drive should then just pull out. use the little speedo gear as a dip stick to check the oil level.

o yer and you'll need a bit of hose pipe attached to a funnal to fill the box again.

hope this helps

i use a syphon pump to do mine approx £5 off ebay and it makes it so much quicker

the gearbox should take about 2.5 litres of oil
