On a manual gearbox it's measured by removing the speedo drive cable, and then using the drive gear as a dipstick..

According to Haynes about 4mm of oil on the bottom.

It's topped up down that hole too - described as "difficult".

I think it's to do with aiming your bottle of oil at a tiny opening down the back of the gearbox - let us know how you get on

The quote regarding refilling the gearbox in Haynes is "an extremely awkward operation" - perhaps they just mean messy.

When I topped it up I let some drop onto the road as I missed the hole Probably best to put together some sort of funnel with a long reach hose.

i worked at gear boxes on my rwd corolla twincam and theres nothing as stinkin as box oil!!!!!!! got on my jumper and stunk the whole washing load out.

i bot a wee pump that goes on2 the end of a drill/cordless. u put a length of hose in2 the bottle then on2 the pump then from the pump in2 the gear box and pull the trigger. oil gets pumped effortlessly in2 the box and no spillages. wee pump was only bout £5.

also handy 4 toping up diffs etc.
