| Hi everyone. I'm in a bit of a bind wth a split pin that cannot be removed... Have tried: - penetrating oil freeze release spray sprayed for prolonged periods pliers quite alot grinding the joined end off pin punch and hammer also tried drilling through with a small drill bit but my drill bit ended up snapping It was not possible to twist or grab it at the joined end as this was straight on and big enough to fill the gap in the castellated nut. It is well and truly seized in ![]() Here are some pictures www.an1.co.uk/DSC00553.JPG www.an1.co.uk/DSC00554.JPG My guess is the best approach now is to try drill the split pin out but not sure what sort or size of drill bit is best. Looking at that thread I wonder if the nut will even come off when I get the split pin out. Thanks very much in advance for any suggestions Last edited by anewman; 29-05-2008 at 16:28. |

| Re: Unremovable split pin on track rod ends have you tried wiggling the 'split' end of the pin till it snaps off??? either that or get a small chisel and bash it till it flattens normally they loosen enough to pull them out with pliers when you do that. |

| Re: Unremovable split pin on track rod ends Have tried wiggling split end and ends have snapped off but not flush with the track rod end's thread. Would the aim of bashing it with the chisel be to smash the ends in till the nut can be undone? Would one of those nut splitter things work? |

| Re: Unremovable split pin on track rod ends no, bash them flat with a chisel or a screwdriver so it aligns with the hole through the rod end, then you should be able to knock it out with a pin punch |

| Re: Unremovable split pin on track rod ends Hi Have you any way of heating it and the nut. If you can try and cover the rubber cover of ball joint if you are keeping it or if not get the heat into it . Once its had the heat get a socket or spanner on the nut and slacken it the split pin will decide its time to go. Regards Whoosh

Will take a walk probably to B&Q and get a blow torch. I assume this one for a tenner with up to 1350 degrees c will get it heated to the desired level? GoSystem Blowlamp Black/Silver Effect, 5036720207004 Also I am guessing it's best for me to leave the steering lock off, or should the lock deal with the stress of me trying to rag the nut off? | |

| Re: Unremovable split pin on track rod ends Undo the nut and allow it to split the split pin off, then just get a Nyloc nut which will be just as good and will be MOT passable (trust me im a tester) Phil

| Re: Unremovable split pin on track rod ends Just starting to round the nut off Going to give it another try in a bit, but starting to think it would have been a good idea to leave the job to a garage. This is probably the most difficult bit and the rest of the job will hopefully be easy. |

| Re: Unremovable split pin on track rod ends What penetrating oil were you using? That looks like a job for PlusGas (accept no substitutes). |

| Re: Unremovable split pin on track rod ends Have tried: - Halfords penetrating oil. 3-in-one professional high performance penetrant spray. Any ideas where to get plusgas from? Tried searching the usual suspects on the internet but no results. Starting to think it might be a good idea to admit defeat, tighten everything back up and call around some local garages to ask if they can just take the nuts off and bung some nylocs on. There's some back street garages not far in some under railway lock-ups, one has a sign saying Lada specialist ![]() Last edited by anewman; 30-05-2008 at 12:56. |

| Re: Unremovable split pin on track rod ends Blow torch on full for 5 minutes did the trick, saw it smoking and it made some crackling noises which I think must have been the rust giving way. Note to self: after heating a nut with a blow torch and undoing it with a spanner, do not touch end of spanner ![]() Thanks for all the suggestions guys, will have to grab myself a can of plusgas when I can find it for future use. Just the other side to do now - and have the M12 nylocs ordered Last edited by anewman; 30-05-2008 at 15:37. |

| Re: Unremovable split pin on track rod ends Ive been in the trade now for over 25 years , and have tried every concievable type of penetrating oil, WD40 and duck oil have proved to be the best, but if you get stuck coke cola will do the job as well, as long as it isnt flat
