Re: whirring noise when dipping the clutch

Worn clutch release bearing? Could give a whirring or even /whistling/squeaking sound? A bit early after only 40,000 miles but anything can happen. Has the clutch ever been changed?

Re: whirring noise when dipping the clutch

For the OP and Swedish, it's early for a clutch release bearing problem, unless the car's done lots of town mileage in the hands of someone who sat at lights with the clutch down, and that seems quite likely with a 10YO car that's only done 40_000 miles.

For Cptn S, it's tricky when stationary, and not usually necessary when rolling. If it is necessary, remember that the change into first is usually the slowest on any car.

Re: whirring noise when dipping the clutch

Sounds like a thrust bearing issue- should still shift ok, but noise may get worse.

it'll be a gearbox off job to change, may as well do clutch whilst its off-2 birds, 1 stone

Agree, it would be surprisingly early. I always sit with clutch down at lights and sold my old Micra with 200,000 miles on the clock (not all of them town miles of course) with original bearing and clutch working perfectly.

But sometimes things do break down long before estimated time.

When/how does the noise appear? As soon as you press the pedal? When pedal is at the floor? Ore somewhere in between?

Probably not the bearing then as it should squeal as soon as it's under pressure. If there's a good mechanic close by, ask him to listen (or her ) - hard to diagnose on the web (I have seen postings here with audio files attached, though)

Wonder what would happen if you just slacked the clutch cable a tiny bit? Do you have to push the pedal all the way down to completely release the gearbox/engine? Is there a lot of play or practically none?

Re: whirring noise when dipping the clutch

its a strange one..........the clutch and gear shift feel fine.........my old man......who was a taxi driver for around twenty years mentioned its somthing to do with the flywheel????? it must be really difficult to diagnose with a described sound.......it sounds like a passive noise.....not grindy or whiney just whirry lol....also the thread about the clunking noise recently posted.....my car has this symptom.....maybe connected....hmmmmm

Re: whirring noise when dipping the clutch

I didn't think Felicias had dual mass flywheels? Of course, the clutch release bearing presses on the flywheel.
