BRISKODA.net: First couple of weeks with the MX-5 - BRISKODA.net

A couple of weeks ago I sold my Triumph Tiger 1050, and converted the cash into 2 vehicles and a small pot of holiday money.

I bought Pete's MX-5 and in the 2 weeks I have had it, I have mostly driven it and smiled a lot. There's a couple of minor things to tidy up, maybe over winter get the bonnet resprayed and replace the door weather strips. All in all though, it's a really tidy car.

So far, it has been treated to a full "De-Rust", and rustproofing at Chassis Clean near Knutsford. They have made an excellent job of things, as part of the process (they need the car for a week) they remove the wheels, the arch liners, door trims / cards, sill plates and then with a combination of steam and high pressure washing, they blast the entire underside of the car, and over the top of all the suspension components before moving the car to a temperature controlled room to dry out for 2 days. They then repair any holes (3 holes in my outer sill's where revealed), rust convert, re apply stone chip, then waxoyl doors, boot lid, bonnet, arch's etc before another 2 days drying and then a full under seal of the entire underside of the car, including the upper surfaces of all components. It really is a first class job and should protect the car for many years to come, and their work comes with a 2 year warranty.

Here are a couple of pics from when I picked it up today from Chassis Clean, with Pete playing taxi (Thanks mate). Tomorrow I will post some pictures of the underside of the car post treatment.

Other mods to do,
replace gear knob with leather from posh model
fit my new leather gaiters for the hand brake and gear lever
fit the stainless lower grill
carbon wrap some interior trim

I just replaced the plugs, and swapped the ignition leads out for a set of JR Performance item's because the originals where causing a misfire. I also fitted a set of Toyo Proxes T1R tyres (Well Pete did, after I got them delivered to him) a full set of 195/50 VR15 for £113 delivered (That's all in, not per tyre)

More as and when it happens....

I need to find a detailer in the North West for a bit of paint correction work on the wee beastie and then look at doing a little more tarting up.

Looking good there Tony.
If you are after a detailers in the North West speak to Miglior Detailing. I have seen some of his work and it is breath-taking and Jay is a real nice bloke to boot.
Nice car there Tony , i had 1 like that , next time we do stuff , lets check there is'nt a national event locally , that traffic was not fun , all them people wanting to see bloody flowers ....
How's the hairdressing coming along Tony? :giggle:

Nice car, looks tidy.

Interested to read about the chassis clean, was it expensive?
Hi John

It was £375 for the Chassis clean, and £20 for the holes to be welded, rustproofed and stonechipped.

I never got chance to photo the underside because of work commitments but when I get home this weekend I will get it on the ramps as I am doing an oil change on the box and diff so will take pictures then.

You can see the process they use and some testinonials etc here, I don't have any complaints at all, with the 2 year warranty it can only help add a little value to the car.

They stripped and sealed things like the ARB's as well, and did thing's like de-rusted and sealed the power steering pipes as they are exposed on the MX-5.

It is done on a farm, as a secondary line of business, but they really seem to know their stuff.

That sounds like a good investment and should help protect the car for many years to come, particularly if it is mainly used in the dry.

With a Prius and now an MX5 on your drive Tony, tongues must be really wagging around your neighbourhood :giggle:
Let me know if you want to borrow my GHD's and I'll get them back off Col G!

Dont forget to change the oil in the gearleaver turret too... its only around 100ml but youll need to remove the centre console and gearstick to get to it.

Also doing the gearbox oil is a royal PITA.. a oil-pump thing is handy for this as you wont be able to get a bottle to the filler hole.

I have that in hand at the moment, the gearbox turret was dry because the boot's (upper and lower) had perished (11 years old though so not surprised) New boot's are arriving from the local Mazda dealer on Thursday (Cheaper than MX5 parts and Autolink strangley) and will be finishing it off on Saturday morning.

I stripped out because I am relocating the radio to the top slot and removed the gear lever gaiter / trim to carbon wrap the trim and dash facia, and replace the gaiter with a leather ebay special.

I will have a look at Machine mart and see what they have, I am thinking of getting one of their oil extractors so I can just suck it all out through the dipstick instead of gettin up on the ramps to do the oil. Is the gearbox filler plug easier to fill from above while the console is out do you reckon?

Ahh ok.. i have one of those machinemart oil sucker/pump things.. not got round to using it yet though... i know some people have used a bit of hose and filled the 'box from the engine bay but i guess it depends how long you have to mess around.. the important thing about the diff and gearbox is keeping the car level to get the right amount in...

of course make sure you can get the filler bolt out before you undo the bottom one.. trap i almost fell into with the diff lol
Sounds good Tony.

Can't believe you two managed to pick Knutsford's busiest week of the year though - quality! :giggle:
