| Only way I found to do that was go into properties of the task on the service box and select disable on the drop down. How you actually remove is 100% is very complicated I was told, and involved registry stuff... something I've never done. Then you can stick it in a new folder somewhere and re-set it up as a service. It should then appear as another FAH entry in the services box (with correct new directory) and you can hit "start" on that one then.

| If the console executable is still in the same place then running -configonly and choosing "No" for the "install as a service" option will uninstall the service IIRC. If I'm wrong then run the exe with the -? flag to find the correct option. Jason's problem was that the exe had moved by that point. The brave might like to have a poke around in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es but wear oven gloves (or at least don't complain to me if you burn your fingers )

| The thing about the service setup is its best to stick the folding DOS executable exactly where you want it before kicking it off. I made the mistake of having it loose on my desktop and so I started it and off and it generated all those notepad docs and other files there too. So I know have a FAH service pointing at my desktop set to "disabled". ![]()

| Removing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\<whateverthefahservicenameis> and restarting the PC will remove it from the services list. The Service Control Manager reads the list into memory when you start up, so just removing it from the registry won't have any effect until a restart. Alternatively, this article describes the use of sc to add or remove services from the command line (DOS window).

| Nice one, well done, ace guide. Might be worth adding to it that if previously installed as graphical app, you need to run it as commandline with the -configonly option to tell it to run as a service. Else it wont appear in Services. Other than that, spot on :> Now running hopefully more stabley!

| Thanks J, I now have my X2 dual core folding. I have two instances each loaded up as a separate service, i.e: Z:\folding\1 and Z:\folding\2 That also means it's easy to identify which service is which because it puts the path in the service name ![]() Only nerdy question now is how to set the affinity of a service... With the GUI version, you can set the afinity and decide for yourself which CPU(s ) it uses. When it's set up as a service, that freedom is cut off. Not that it matters that much, but it would be nice if I could tweak just a bit more ![]() Anyway, now I have two services running, my new core is showing 100% cpu usage. Before, it was only 50 ![]() Edited to add: if anyone wants to run multiple services / instances, you have to go into the advanced settings option given when you do the -config to set a different CPU ID for each service you're running otherwise, it'll throw up an error ![]()

| Yes, this is where the "MACHINE ID" section comes in. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE 1 AND 2 FOR EACH DIFFERENT FOLDING SERVICE IT WILL NOT WORK RIGHT. Lecture over. Glad to see you throwing a little more CPU the team's way, Xav.

| Can anyone help me???? Been meaning to start this folding malarky for ages. Finally got round to it today but I'm having problems. First off, in the DOS command prompt window, it asked for User ID first, not the team number as above, but because I'm thick I entered 42567. So that is now my user name. I then bluffed my way through the next questions (proxy server etc) when I must admit I really didn't know what I was doing. Then the main problem - i right click on FAH and clicked Start but the progress bar did not finish and said something like "there was no timely response". When I try to right click FAH again, Start is greyed out, although I notice that in the "Status" column it says "Starting". Am I better off uninstalling this and using the GUI idiot guide? i did it this way cos I thought it was capable of more processing power. HELP! |

| Sounds odd. Might be worth stopping that task, delete that folder on C: and restart in a fresh folder with a fresh copy of the executable. Then go user name team number (42567) and the other details not bothering with advanced options. Then either reboot the PC, or go into the system, manage, etc etc and start the new task for the new directory. Leave the first attempt as "stopped" or "disabled" ![]()

| I think I might go for the GUI version instead. I take it I can just uninstall the other one? I leave my PC on 24/7 so I should be able to make up for the difference! |

| You don't actually "uninstall" because you never did "install" - You only created a windows service, so stopping it is effictively unistalling. If you use the graphical client, tweak the settings for the graphics side of things right down (right click on the rose and its one of the settings) - Helps ever such a tiny ickle bit with speed.

| Umm, I'm going to have to re-host these pics elsewhere. Hopefully the guide alone still makes sense?
