Default dodgy re-map!!!

I seem to be getting a massive increase of broken pd130 fabia's and ibiza's!! All with blown turbos and slipping clutches.
Got 2 in at min, on one of them the compressor cover has broken away from the turbo and the comp wheel is smashed to bits and some have even come out of the intercooler pipes!!! The intercooler is scrap as its full of lumps of comp wheel!!!

Some so called tuners seem to think the stock KP39 can handle 1.9-2 bar boost and the stock clutch is good for 300+ ft-lb at like 1800 rpm!!!!

I'll post some pics in the morning of this KP39 is proper!!!

I think it's the relative availbility of cheap maps and cheap gear to install the software in the hands of inexperienced users.

Sadly the owners are the victims.

IMHO it's people trying to push the cheap maps too far.

Unless they really know what they are doing, if they wan't to offer a cheap generic map they should take the route of caution and not push anything too hard.

I'd guess that you could say:

- std = 130
- cheap remap = 150-160
- Expensive Generic = 160-170
- Custom Map = More.

Eg you can't expect a cheap map without much testing to give you as much power as one that has been tested.

Running a PD130 at 150 power done in a sensible way shouldn't stress anything too much. I've heard on one generic guy who is putting out very aggressive maps, but he didn't have the slightest clue how the system worked.

Even mine's not tuned to 2 bar boost! I cannot believe that any tuner would ask for a vnt17 to push that kind of boost!

I think it also highlights the importance of having a boost gauge in a mapped car to be able to monitor boost. There's been no end of times my gauge has been useful when my car's been playing up a little bit for whatever reason. EGT too.

That turbo above looks salvageable.

mine is tuned to 1.9, allowed to spike to 2.1 max.

Best criticism of any tuner is that he is "conservative" - rather have a few less ponies than one less turbocharger......

Got another one in at min on a Ibiza, the turbo is even worse than the fabia one above. This one has taken the engine out too I think :s

Also had several calls about PD130 and PD150 blowing the intercoler pipes off and even bursting the plastic pipework!!!!!

Do they produce more boost in warmer weather? Tho get the same amount of oxygen in.....what with cooler air being more dense it needs less or am reading too far into it

i realised mine today was boosting to 2.3 bar and settling off at 2.0 bar and holding to redline

you normally see more boost in cooler weather., If you have a TD phase 2 turbo, 1.9 bar is the max for power. Any more they seem to tail off.
Also the stock boost pressure sensor only reads to about 1.9 bar.

Yer we had that problem when it was being mapped.

I have an aftermarket gauge tapped into the inlet, its running normally now according to gauge, boosts the 2.0bar and settles off at 1.8.....Random

Any of these cars have decat and/or big exhaust and/or induction mods by any chance.

Seems to be "common knowledge" that the best way to improve your turbo car is to decat it. I think you might get away with it on an otherwise standard car but not with a generic remap aimed at producing a sooty 180bhp.

PS: Jason, didn't you have the odd boost spike to deal with during the development of your car? Maybe 2.5bar (ish).

J.

How many times have I bleated on about going to a decent tuner & paying a proper price for a decent map by someone with a good reputaion who knows what they are doing.

People continually only worry about what the price tag says & fail to grasp that if its cheap theres usually a reason. Its a shame so many people learn the hard way !!

Its a bit like the cheap tyre & alloy combinations, wheels Ok ish, tyres are usually "less than the best"
