Changing Octavia I onto variable servicing

Hi,

I've just bought VAG COM, mainly as I want to change my 2002 90bhp TDI Octavia I back onto variable servicing. I've previously set it to fixed using the trip counter button method.

Question is, how do I do that? The pdf instructions for VAG COM imply that I can just "change to variable (diesel)", but say that the label file might not support it.

My label file does (1U0-920-xxx-17.LBL), but it doesn't show oil quality etc, and the comment in the file says "When changing between service intervals on this model make sure to change the instrument cluster coding first!".

What do I have to change? Does it mean the cluster coding? I can't see anything in the coding related to service interval. Or do I just have to set Adaptation 45 to Longlife oil quality?

And once I've changed coding/adaptation, do I then use the SRI reset function, or do I have to do it all by hand the first time?

Sorry for all the questions, but this is all new to me, and I don't want to mess it up!

What software and data version of VAG-COM are you using? What is your current coding?

VAG COM Release 704.1, Data version 20071016, downloaded Friday last week, when I ordered the lead.

Current coding for instrument cluster is 19412.

The second from last digit denotes the servicing regime. 1 for variable and 2 for fixed. As it was reset using the buttons the original coding hasn't been changed, so if you set channel 2 to 0 it will be on variable servicing, or you could use the SRI reset function.

Ahhh - that makes sense. So it's either picked up the wrong label file, or the label file is wrong.... The label file says that the second last digit is the number of cylinders (which had already confused me - see my other thread).

So, just to check I've got this straight:

Because I set it to fixed via the dashboard button it's actually still coded to be variable and a simple SRI reset will actually go back to variable? The comment in the label file about changing the coding is for if I'd gone onto fixed by changing the coding in VAG COM, in which case I'd now be on 19422.

I guess the oil quality (Adaptation 45) probably won't have changed either when I did the dashboard reset, and will probably already be on Longlife even though I'm currently on fixed - I'll check that this evening.

Yes. the dash panel is still coded for variable and setting the indicator on the buttons brings up the service reminder at 10000 miles or 365 days whichever occurs first. A SRI reset or simply setting channel 2 to 0 will give a service reminder at a variable interval. If the dash panel coding was 19422 adapting channel to to 0 or an SRI reset would put it on fixed service intervals.

Just out of interest, if I ever wanted to change it properly onto fixed (using VAG COM rather than the dashboard button), as well as setting the coding to 2 I would presumably need to change the oil quality too (adaptation 045)?

And does it matter in what order you change the coding, the oil quality, and the mileages (which I guess can be set by the Service Reset application thing)? I'm assuming the actual service reset (adaptation 002) has to be last.

But as I said, that's just out of interest if you happen to know. For what I want now, I just have to do adaptation 002/SRI reset, so that's really easy.

I think that you just set channel 2 to 0 first and you shouldn't need to worry about the rest, as the dash panel coding should tell them what value to be. Though it wouldn't do any harm to check.

Please post complete details from your cluster so we can double check what's up with that. Easiest way is Select -> 17-Instruments -> Fault Codes -> Copy Codes. Even if there are no fault codes, this will copy all relevant ID info about the cluster into the Windows clipboard from where you can paste it here (or into an intermediate Notepad file if the PC you're scanning with doesn't have 'net access).

I'd actually started another thread about the cluster coding at the same time, as I hadn't realised the coding had anything to do with the service schedule. Sebastian has already asked for a full scan on that other thread, and has apparently now fixed the label file.
