Testing engine electronics dash light...

it came on last night as i nipped out to see my sister, just after i went around a tight mini roundabout, and now is still on this morning.

car starts and drives fine, but what is likely to be the cause, in the octy handbook it states...

"If the warning light does not go out after starting the engine or comes on or flashes when driving, that indicates a fault in the engine electronics system or in systems which influence exhaust emissions"

whats likely to be the cause and should i stop driving the octy with immediate affect or not to worry too much but get it booked in to be put on vag-com etc

cheers
lee

Re: Testing engine electronics dash light...

Reading the codes either with VAG-COM or at the dealers with VAS should reveal the cause and is more reliable than trying to guess Lee.

Re: Testing engine electronics dash light...

Mine comes on all the time, fault code reveals a shagged cat but I know it 's not so. Maybe your running a bit rich (I know I am), VAG-COM or Dealer will determine the cause.

Re: Testing engine electronics dash light...

Well..... visited JBS on saturday just gone...verdict...

Check fault codes - Fault found, Pressure drop between throttle body and turbo.

They:

Checked all boost and vacuum hoses... then cleaned and re-aligned throttle body and stripped and cleaned diverter valve
Was there about 3 hours in total - apparently the above were pretty well gunked up(w/e that means)
they also turned the map down slightly as to prolong the life of the turbo, being that my car now has 103000 miles on clock - will the above led jbs to think the turbo is on its way, or just general good practice with it having 103000 miles???

I aint got a clue when it comes to stuff like this am afraid
One thing i can say is that the car pulss so much better lower down the rev range than it did previous to saturday which is good.

Anyway let me know your thoughts please

Re: Testing engine electronics dash light...

Why not ask JBS the question if they advised the changes they must have good reason for it.

Jusding by your list of planned mods, having the turbo turned down isn't going to be what you want, so if it is on it's way out then perhaps that might have to jump to the top of the list.

They may have just reduced the boost spike, as advised though the best people to ask are JBS as they are the ones that did it.

Re: Testing engine electronics dash light...

Yup, that's just popped up on mine again!!!! along with 10 other fault codes ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, PLUS they're all intermittent.
The other 10 are all "Short to Ground", How the hell do I sort that lot out.
I smell a huge fee coming my way from the dealership.

Wayne, I'd look for a common fuse, common ground or a relay going to the effected area. But without more detail, it would all be just a guess.

Re: Testing engine electronics dash light...

Wayne,

I don't have access to wiring diagrams for your car. Outside of the pressure drop, I still think you are looking at a common connection problem to all these sensors. I would guess that there is a +Bat connection to all of them somewhere that is dropping out. That is why the intermittent nature of them.

But, could it be a module? Sure. Still, given the price of a module, I'd first eliminate the wiring possibility by going through the wiring diagram and looking for a common thread. But then I am an EE and that's the way my head works.

Hopefully someone who knows more than me will answer and give you a better heads up.

Re: Testing engine electronics dash light...

I am totally guessing here, check the power supply relay to the ECU, it is situated under the bonnet under a plastic cover with another relay, to the rear right of the engine bay as you look at it.

Bruce,

I don't have a wiring diagram either (wish I had). You say your an "EE", what's that, view my public profile, we may be talking the same language.

The way I see it is, if there is a interuption in the supply to the ECU, all systems would show a fault.

EE = Electronics/Electrical Engineer

I really think you need to get a repair manual. I understand that they only have them in German for you car but the wiring diagrams should still be helpful. So, give that a try. See if someone might have copy and be good enough to share with you.
