Default VAG-COM connection cables - wiring diagram.

Having looked at various web pages offering VAG-COM cables at silly prices I'm after a wiring diagram and connector details for the thing.

We wire hundreds of looms at work each week and I can assure you that the VAG-COM lead would cost less than £5 to make.

Are you offering to make serial cable for use with VAG-COM?

Please remember that any plug connecting to the diag port on your car should have a longer earth pin than the others to prevent damage to your vehicle ECU's.

Check out www.andywhittaker.com and have a look at his OBDII hardware page. I believe he sells the "blueprint" to his circuit board for not much money......

On the SK Pang website are details of the intelligent interface rather than the optical type.

The chips to make the intelligent interface are available from SK Pang and cost abot £8 but are surface mounted and will require a printed circuit board designing for these chips. The compoent count is much lower using these chips and it will work with the latest VAG-com software (400 series).

The OBDII plugs are available from the States but the suppliers require a minimum purchase of $50, otherwise they can be bought from Andy Whittaker for about £8 each.

Hope this is of use.

Have a look at this site:

http://www.planetfall.com/~jeff/obdii/

There are schematics for an opto-isolated RS-232 to OBD-II interface, as well as a PCB layout. It doesn't actually include the ODB-II connector, but the pinouts are compatible with one of these:

http://www.gendan.co.uk/viewproduct....oduct=STNCBLO2

I can even give you the RS part numbers for the components:

110-185 Opto Coupler, transistor, UL E524 Approv
294-312 Transistor, Bipolar, NPN, 2N3904
446-5209 Connector, rectangular, multipole, D, pl
446-5243 Connector, rectangular, multipole, D, so
261-176 Diode, Rectifier, 1N4004
115-607 Capacitor, metallised polyester, film, m
148-506 Resistor, metal film, 0.25W, 1%, 1k
148-736 Resistor, metal film, 0.25W, 1%, 10k
148-540 Resistor, metal film, 0.25W, 1%, 1k5
149-026 Resistor, metal film, 0.25W, 1%, 150k

I built one for myself, and it came to about £35 including the cable, delivery etc. Would definitely be cheaper in quantity (and not getting the bits from RS!). And yes, it works.

Would a USB interface cable be more difficult/expensive to make?

I don't think so. It's just a straight cable without any electronics in it- you still need an interface to connect it to your PC, and that's usually the expensive bit.
