VAG COM query...

Right here goes, i have a mate in the trade who usually does my servicing but his garage doesn't have a VAG COM rig, if i get him to service my VRS with genuine parts and i buy a VAG COM myself, can i keep it on variable servicing by setting it myself using the VAG COM?
Also i would need a USB setup as neither of my Lappy's have serial, does USB work ok?
Finally is it fairly easy to use and are instructions included?

Thanks guys

You can buy USB cables, or you can get a serial usb adaptor.

Other question I don't know. I'm sure an expert will be along soon.

You can get USB cables, but I've heard there are some issues with them. Not sure how true that is though, especially as it's harder and harder to find a new laptop with a serial lead

When you're talking about variable servicing with VAG-COM, are you just talking about resetting the service indicator, or something else?

I am talking about resetting the service indicator, but i want it to stay on variable servicing. From what i understand (not much ) if i reset the service indicator as per the manual i will revert to fixed servicing. Which i don't really want as i do not do a lot of mileage. I am quite happy to buy the USB version if it works ok, but i would not be happy to spend over £200 and be having problems. Could you please PM me or mail me regarding the trial version please.

You don't need Vagcom to reset the service indicator, it should show you how in the manual

Yes i realise that, but from what i understand, that just puts it on fixed servicing, not variable. Is that correct?

Thanks Scooby will check it out and cheers Roger

If you reset the service light with the buttons on the dash it will reset it to fixed values yes.

I would have thought you can reset a variable service light if you know what channels to go into, or you could recode the dash again for variable service which should reset the values.

Give us a shout nearer the time when you have VAG COM and i'll talk you through it.

Thanks Ross will do. Do you have instructions for VAG COM? I'm looking to order one next week if i decide that i can make it worth my while (by saving on servicing really) Are the ones from the vag com co.uk site the best value or is there a better alternative? Feel free to PM me if you prefer as i would like to get the best deal, but don't want cheap if it doesn't work properly

There was a FAQ I wrote on here about the common changes you can make - will have to see if I can find it as it appears to have been lost in the restructure.......

Try following this link:

http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/index.html

The procedures for the Golf Mk IV work for the Octy as do most of the common procedure section.

vag com

resetting the service display with the buttons on the dash will only reset
the shedule that the dash is coded for.
if its set to long life, the buttons will reset it to long life, and visa versa.
to change to annual or fixed servicing, the coding in the dash panel must be
changed.
you must use fully synt long life oil for extended servicing as the oil soot
content is checked by the sensor in the engine sump,
if long life is not used the service will come early.

The Octy 1 IS a Golf IV with a different shell and engine. The only discrepancy I found on the Vag-Com site I mentioned earlier seems to be in the instructions for the central conveniance, some of the addresses are 1 out (auto lock and all) but the Vag-Com program gives plain english as to what the values are so just read what it says.
(46-Cent Conv, adapt i think off the top of my head)

If you are on about the scan all modules section (whatever it's called), use the Octavia 1U option for the Octy vRS and the appropriate option for the appropriate car. I doubt there would be any problems using the Golf IV option but seen as the real option is there........
