| Your car should be serviced for free should it not, given it's age?

| Can only tell you that for a 1.4 TDi (Level 2) the 10k service was about £200 and the 20k service was £250. This was done at Robert Bamford Skoda (Glos). Too lazy (at the moment!) to ring around for other prices. |

| this seems to be excessive for 10k service £200 to change oil and kick tyres,as a production engineer i find this excessive, this is not a service charge, this is a .warranty surcharge'. will ring round tomorrow to if prices vary. |

| Is it possible to use a non skoda dealer without invalidating the warranty if they use genuine skoda parts? |

| Yes, it's quite legal now to have most new cars serviced at a non-franchised dealer in the first 3 years - or whatever the warranty term is - without invalidating the warranty. Office of Fair Trading legislation going back to 2004. Not many people realise this, unfortunately... Find a good under-the-arches garage that will do an oil/filter change for £40 and - most importantly - won't charge VAT because their turnover is low. |

| I'm planning to use a very good local garage unless there's some specific reason to take the car to the dealer. We happen to have an excellent independent garage within walking distance of home. When our Vauxhall dealer went into administration and closed, we tried another dealer 18 miles away, but weren't very impressed. Since then, our local garage has been doing an excellent job. The savings are significant - I had a major service, cambelt change (including a new water pump), new brake pads and a brake fluid change on my Astra for just over £500. The same work at a dealer would have been well over £600. He's happy to service my Fabia and will use Skoda parts to maintain the validity of the warranty.

| You can have your car serviced at any VAT registered garage, you don't even have to use genuine parts. However, the parts must be of equivalent quality and you may have to prove this in the event of a warranry claim. If a problem occurs out of warranty, Skoda will take into account the service history and will be more accomodating for goodwill contributions to those cars that have been serviced within their dealer network. Also any remedial work/workshop campaigns (may include software updates) that need to be done on a scheduled workshop visit obviously won't get done if it is not going to a dealer. |
