Buying a Fabia

I'm looking at a Skoda Fabia 1.9 diesel (2000), but I'm a complete amateur with cars so I need a bit of advice. It's only going for £1000 but it comes with a few problems.

Firstly, the dealer tells me the battery has been running flat every 3 or 4 days while it's sitting idle, although he says it shouldn't be a problem if it's being used everyday.

Secondly is the mileage. 200,000 miles on the clock. But it is a diesel so that's not so bad.

The car was originally going for £2000, I found it in local ads website. When I phoned the dealer told me he'd just removed it from sale after discovering the battery problem, and hadn't intended on selling it. Which is why he offered it for a grand.

Anyway, if anyone can offer me some advice I would really appreciate it. Is this battery problem fixable? Am I likely to run into a lot of problems with a car that has done 200,000? Is it worth buying?
Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't buy it. I would look for something else, or save your money up and spend more. At 200000 miles things start wearing beyond the obvious. If you are keen enough get an AA inspection...........

200,000 miles is a lot, even for a diesel and I'd be expecting some of the expensive parts to be wearing out at that sort of age, gearbox, turbo, etc. I'd also be very weary about a seller who has halved the price based on a fault which should go away if the car is used every day!

As said above, if you're serious, get it checked out by a mechanic/AA so you don't get ripped off

If the battery is going flat while sitting idle, isn't that just a replacement battery? My Rover did that - fine if you used it every day, but leave it for a couple and it wouldn't start.

If he is offering it for £1k, start your bidding at about £400.

Wouldn't pay as much a £1k for it, you could get much more for your money elsewhere. Battery going flat does sound like a new battery is needed, probably only about £30.

Call me cynical () but if that was all the problem was, surely he'd have thought of that, fixed it and left it up for sale at £2000

Fair point. Though he'd likely have made it £2030 then.

If it drives OK, tell him you'll have it for £500 with 12 months MOT, it's got to be worth that surely.
