| ...can you disable the turbo on a turbo engine? Having read about the blown turbo, and being the worlds slowest driver, I'm wondering if I really need to risk blowing one up when I don't really need it. Yes, I'm sure my car will be slow, presumably like an SDi, but I can live with that. I'm sure it needs to be used occasionally to keep it working, but my understanding is that it only cuts in when you put your foot down. Just a thought, I don't want a big repair bill. I don't mind a slow car.

| i supose you could, but you would probably lose far more than performance, and the cost of the re map to enable reliable non turbo running alone would make it pointless,as you could pick up a new turbo for less, don't worry about blowing it,just deal with it if it happens

| If you're happy to run without the turbo, then there seems little point disconnecting a fully working turbo until it finally breaks So long as you exercise the turbo every so often and give it some beans it shouldn't fail for the forseeable future.Chris

| people blowing turbos is rubbish... ive done 105k in my remapped vRS (95k remapped) and its still on the original turbo and clutch, as long as you look after it ie correct oil, not thrashing it from cold itll last for ages ![]() |

| Yes, you could - however try driving your car without ever using the turbo, I think you might find it rather annoying. My old Volvo T5 blew it's turbo - I drove it for a bit without (it was going to be scrapped anyway), and it was horrible to drive. The car was designed to use the turbo, so pretty much all acceleration was gone. Last edited by JMC; 09-02-2008 at 20:33. |
