There are a few things to bear in mind when trying to deal with dealers.

1. Never buy a car at the begining of the month - they will give you a pants deal.
2. Never claim another dealer has given you deal "x" - if its not true.dealers do talk to each other you know!
3. If you are going to need finance, make sure that you take the required paperwork, usually drivers licence, proof of earnings and proof of address - going prepared makes you look more serious, rather than a "Window Licker"
4. If you can go in during the week,it will be quiter and the salesman(woman) will be happier to spend more time with you.

They best way to get a good deal would be :

1.Go in couple of days before end of month(Weekday) as they are trying to get numbers up for budget
2.Have no P/X - esp if it's a car they would not like to retail themselves.
3.If finance needed - as above or already sourced and in the bank ready

its yellow that should be a good reason for discount.. pitch on lower residuals and the fact they cant sell it.. (given that most dealers will make you wait for a Fabia in a "pref" colour it should be worth a punt....)

not trying to start a bun fight with owners of yellow cars but most dealers will offer less for a yellow one as they are harder to sell on.

Although as I have said before even IF you do all this, the discounts will be pretty negligible anyway, so probably not worth bothering. The reason?....simple....the Fabia vRS is very very desirable right now so dealers dont have to or need to haggle.

In some ways all this business about buying at a certain time of the month or year is pants, the exceptions being when a newer model is being introduced and the dealers want to shift the previous models. On a model that ISN'T being replaced anytime soon AND is very desirable you may as well forget it IMHO, although you can try. Good luck.

Ye I printed off a few quotes from the net and the dealer matched it!....Eventually.

I've found that going to smaller dealers give the better dealers, I went to one on a main road near a city an the salesman was having none of it so I went to a smaller dealer just off the motorway and they gave the discount.

Although £11,500 for a desirable car like the vRS is quite a good discount when the price is something like £12,350?

If you are ordering a factory car then yes - your not likely to get anywhere, however if the car your looking at is a stock car - especialy if its been in a while - then you are likely to get something.

The dealers get the cars for a period of time before they actually part with any cash - if they can sell it before they have to pay for it - they will.

There is also something to be said for chosing the dealer correctly - a large city centre dealership will be less likely to give discounts becuase of the overall larger business from walk-ins - but your small family business(not may around now!) will be looking to make sure they sell any car before they need to start paying the interest.Remember just because you buy the car there - it doesnt mean you need to go there for warranty work or service.

Although I don't work in sales - where I work any of us CAN sell cars - some customers prefer to deal with one person - when, like me you've been there over sixteen years you tend to build up your own customer base.

recent case - customer I've know for about 5 years - currently drives S4 78k Nogaro blue AMD chip,H&R Coil overs,Full miltek system - car in mint condition.

Decides he likes the look of the new A3 3.2 with DSG - his spec comes to 29k - we have one in stock - apart from the need to retro fit cruise.

His car books at an unbeivable 8k but it's the last day of Feb and he manages to walk away with said A3 for 18k

I've just chopped in the Scooby for a VRS. I think I got lucky.

I got the best offer from any dealers for the Scooby as PX and then 8.5% (Which I believe is most if not all of the margin) off the new one. It was an in the UK car but i would have got the deal for an ordered one as well but the Scooby is depreciating at around £300 a month so I didn't want to wait 10 weeks.

It might also be something to do with the fact it's the second one i've bought from them this year!

I had some silly bids for my Scooby, seems they are very hard to sell at the moment.

Cav,

The only advice I can give is haggle, haggle and haggle some more if a dealer won’t give you a deal move on to the next. Don’t forget to play one off on the other.

When I went to order my VRS a couple of weeks ago I printed off a few web quotes and went round five nearby dealers, I was not really expecting them to get anywhere near these prices but one of them came within £150 so I ordered it.

Factory order Red VRS sunroof, xenon lights and cruise control for £12,350 the RRP was £13,405 I am well happy with the price.

Good luck I hope you do well…

Thats 8% on the nail all bar a few quid, thats about the best you can expect from what I am led to believe. That is the dealer margin.

Dealer margin is not the only thing they will consider - they might need to sell a car for a particular bonus or to achieve target - whilst not an everyday occurance these can have significant effect on both p/x and price - quite often a dealer will say he's not giving you discount - but will overallow on the p/x - effectively giving a discount
