Default Fuel Economy & Cam Belts

Hi

I wonder if you good people could give me some advice.

I have recently just bought a 2nd hand Fabia 1.4mpi W reg 2000 and thought that Fabia's would be good on fuel but round town I am only getting about 25mpg and even on a run just over 30mpg. Fair enough on the run I was doing 80mph which isn't great for fuel but still thought it would be better.
Do these figures sound right if so then fair enough but I was shocked at how low they were especially when your used to a 106 doing 45mpg.

One other thing does anyone know if this model has a Cam Belt?
Some people say it has and some say it hasn't and has the chain instead so not sure.

any advice would be great

Cheers

Which I was hoping but I just seen the below on another post on the forum more confused than ever.

42.2mpg I wish!!!!!

1.4 16v petrol engine - 100 bhp
The 16-valve 1.4 litre engine is an advanced unit displacing 1390cc and developing 100 bhp @ 6,000 rpm. Peak torque of 126 Nm is reached @ 4,400 rpm. This engine also has a light alloy cylinder head and block for low weight, but differs completely in its technical specification to the 8-valve unit. It utilises a belt driven double overhead camshaft with four valves per cylinder and also has multi-point fuel injection and electronic ignition that
conforms to the EUIV directive.
The engine revs freely and gives the Fabia a potential maximum speed of 115 mph, with 0-62 taking 11.5 seconds. The 16v is just as economical,
returning 42.2 mpg over the EU combined cycle.

yeah, the 16v ones(vw engine) have a belt... two belts in fact.

the mpi ones (skoda engine) has a chain

they all have multi-point injection, and both of the engines mentioned have aluminum engine block and head

Ok cheers

Sure it's an MPI but you got me thinking now (I'm not very mechanical minded as you can tell)

Does yours have a 16v badge? If not then it is the MPI with a chain.

Just been to check and the badge on the back of the car says

1.4
mpi

so looks like I am ok

Cheers fellas

P.S. so far so good with the car no complaints, pesonally though think the acceleration isn't to clever and in 2nd gear at lowish revs can get a funny juddering (but not as if it's going to stall) so have to up the revs a bit at times.

Now then just need to go and learn to drive more efficently

Looks like I am ok and it is a chain I guessed I had the MPI when I lifted the bonet and it was plastered all over the cover of the engine (really should pay more attention)

I have just rung the local dealership up for some advice on a few matters and why is it as soon as they know you didn't buy the car from them they are so un helpful but soon changed his tune when he wanted to charge me for putting it on the diagnostic machine to find out while the fuel economy is so bad but before that he said he didn't even know what average mpg a Fabia should be doing!!!

Has anyone ever tried that redex? I was going to give it a try this week don't think it is going to be the answer to all my problems but was wondering how big an improvment if any it makes.

Was reading some of the Stutter thread before pinned at the top did anything ever get sorted with it?

Cheers

(Rant over about the dealership)

Redex can't hurt (try the fuel injector cleaner) or try any fuel system treatment out of Halfrauds and the like , but I do think your car has some sort of problem , as mine (same engine as yours) gets an easy 36mpg in town when warm , and gets mid to high 40's on a run (and thats with going 80 plus MPH at times , when I'm on narrow twisting roads with lower average speeds I've seen 50+ MPG on the computer readout!)

Ps - easy way to check if its an 8v or 16v , the 8v is 1397cc , whereas the 16V is 1390cc , this should be printed on your V5C Logbook.
