| alrite every body??!! im a new user and i have just joined. this is my very first post - ever...lol!! my uncle has just bought a BMW 323ci (traitor) and i have been given his old 2000 fabia 1.4 8v and it is revving very highly in all gears. the revs are also raising and dropping constantly - even in fifth between 2000 and 3500 rpm. also the timing chain needs changed as it is rattling. i have been told this is the clutch slipping!!?? does this sound right?? i have been quoted £165 in vat+labour for the clutch by a local garage here in Northern Ireland. i have also been quoted around £100 for the changing of the timing chain. do these prices sound resonable? your replies are appreciated. |

| Sounds reasonable to me. Of course spending about £400 ( including parts ) depends on the age and condition of the car. Hello btw.

| It doesn't sound like a clutch issue to me, if it was slipping it would just slip and the revs would rise as you applied the beans. The slipping may then settle and sit at the correct revs for whatever gear you're in, but it shouldn't fluctuate. The prob sounds like something else but I have no idea what it would be sorry. I'm sure someone will come along and correct what I've said here mind! lol

| Anyway, back to the car. What do you mean about the revs? Say you start the car. Does it idle properly, and rev when you hit the throttle?. Lets say it does. If you then accelerate, put it in 4th at 30-40 mph, and then put your foot down hard, do the revs rise without the car accellerating? If so, yes, that's clutch slip. |

| Yeah definately sounds like the clutch , Id get that timing chain done as well , check the shocks for leaks , brake discs/pads and shoes on the back wheels as well. Does the car get an annual service? If so some of this work may have been done already.

| thx mate. i think my uncle said something about the shocks needing greased or something because when the car is pushed down it does not come up quickly, so il definatly get them done. would this be an expensive job to get done?? how much should i expect to pay?? your reply is appreciated. thanx |

| Hi there I dunno about the price of the shocks to be honest , but I'd imagine they would be knackered TBH , just bung on a new set , try somewhere like GSF or a local motor factor for the bits , Skoda dealer prices will be a bit high , especially for a car of that age and milage! Its not that hard a job to change them , and the garage you are using sounds cheap enough for the clutch and timing chain , why not ask them for a quote?
