| MY DRIVE IS ON A 45% INCLINE. PARKED THE CAR AT AROUND 12.30AM AT THE TOP OF THE DRIVE, PUT THE HANDBRAKE ON AND GOT OUT. GOT IN THE HOUSE AND BEGAN WATCHING T.V. FOR 15 MINS BEFORE GOING TO BED. AND SUDDENLY CRASH !! BANG !! WALLOP !! MY PI$$ING CAR HAD ROLLED BACKWARDS OUT OF MY DRIVE, SMASHING MY GATE, ACROSS TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET BEFORE FINALLY ENDING UP IN THE SIDE OF AN N REG POLO. SUPRISE TO SAY I WASN'T A HAPPY BUNNY, I IMMEDIATELY RAN OUT AND EXPLAINED WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO THE OTHER PARTY WHO WHERE VERY UNDERSTANDING. I EXPLAINED THAT THE CAR HAD OBVIOUSLY JUST SLID BACKWARDS ON THE ICE ON MY DRIVE. ANYWAY, THE NET RESULT IS BOTH REAR ARCHES SCRAPED AS THE RUBBED THE WALL ON THE WAY OUT OF MY DRIVE. THE REAR LOWER BUMPER HAS A LARGE SCRATCH ON IT AND A BIT OF THE OTHER DRIVERS CAR. THE BOOT HAS A LARGE DINT IN IT ABOUT THE SIZE OF 2 50P COINS WHERE IT HAS SMASHED THROUGH MY METAL GATE. TOTAL ESTIMATE TO REPAIR MY CAR IS LUCKILY ONLY £100 AS I KNOW A GOOD FRIEND WHO WILL REPAIR IT ON THE CHEAP. TOTAL REPAIR COST OF THE POLO? UNSURE AT THE MOMENT BUT IT SEEMS LIKE IT NEEDS TWO NEW DOORS ON THE OFF SIDE AND A NEW SILL WHICH RUNS BELOW THE DOORS. IN TOTAL THIS WILL COST MORE THAN THE POLO IS WORTH NO DOUBT. HAVEN'T INFORMED THE INSURANCE COMPANY YET UNTIL I GET A PRICE FOR REPAIRS ON THE POLO AFTER WHICH TIME I WILL MAKE MY DECISION. ![]()

| Whoops. Im guessing leaving it in gear could have helped a little. Seems a bit odd that it didnt roll straight away as there must have been ice under the tyres for it to start to slide. Maybe as the rear brakes cooled a touch it allowed the handbrake to come off just enough to start momentum. Back luck mate.

| I have had my car slide a bit on a snowy drive, so whenever i pull up onto it now when it's icy, snowy or frosty, I always bounce up and down on my seat to see if it'll start to slide. Sometimes it does, in which case I take it up the road to park it. I am with Ross though, wonder whether the rear discs might have cooled and slipped? I always keep mine in gear when I park it. |

| Yeah the key is that me & Emma are safe, as much as I like my vRS it's just a car and can always be replaced. Just glad were both ok & no passers by where injured either.

| The only accident of any note I've had in 30-odd years of driving happened years ago when I lived in Shetland. I was driving to the airport to catch an early (7.20 am) flight. It was a very cold morning and the roads were covered in black ice - the gritters hadn't been out. It was a 26 mile drive and although my car (a 323i BMW) had studded winter tyres all round it was very hairy trip I got 25 miles safely. But then I reached the top of a hill. There was a car in front of me who had been off the road twice already so I was keeping a safe distance. I went over the top of the hill at about 10mph to see the car in front broadside across the road at the bottom of the hill. I braked to a halt - then the Beemer started to slide down the hill all wheels locked Inevitable result - crunch Then I got out of the car and ended up on my **** The road was like glass
