Plss Help!!! Replacing the anti-roll bar

Hy I have a Skoda Fabia 1.4 16v 74kw.I want to replace the front anti-roll bar.My car ia fitted with a 18mm bar and I want to install a bigger one (20mm).Is there a downside to this like losing traction or the suspension of the car becomeing to stiff on bumpy roads?I heard that this will make my car understeer more easily. Is this true?If I have too much stabilizer bar, the car tends to lose independence between the suspension members on both sides of the car. When one wheel hits a bump, the stabilizer bar transmits the bump to the other side of the car as well, which is not what I want.My question is is this 20mm bar too big for my car...

Hmm, a bigger front ARB will make the car very understeery.

Get one on the back!

Re: Plss Help!!! Replacing the anti-roll bar

I fitted a vRS bar to an Ibiza Sport which had the 18mm bar as standard, owner thought it was a good mod and was happy. It did induce a little more understeer but the pluses out weigh the minusses.

Re: Plss Help!!! Replacing the anti-roll bar

The 20 mm ARB that I want to install is fitted to the 1.9 TDi engine. It is not a special sport ARB.. so I hope it will work ok on my 1.4 16V...

Jabba do the rear ARB: http://www.jabbasport.com/vehicle_pr...p?variantid=58

Think there's a group buy on or coming? Might be worth asking them if it fits/is suitable for the 1.4 though. I don't see why not, but I'm not a mechanic.

What is the size of your front ARB? Is bigger than 20mm? Is the car understeering a lot? So I`ve heard...that if you install a thicker ARB you will get a lot of understeer and some problems on bumpy roads...

Re: Plss Help!!! Replacing the anti-roll bar

As I've got the heavy vRS lump up front I'm not sure any comparisons are worthwhile. I suppose it all depends on what you want from the car? Will the benefits of a stiffer roll bar outweigh the understeer you might get?

Exactly what I was going to say. The 1.9TDI lump is a LOT heavier than the 1.4 petrol, therefore I'm thinking that fitting an ARB from a TDI might make handling worse rather than better?

It`s not such a big diference in the size of the ARB,only 2 mm...I hope I don`t mess up my cars behavior... Note:I have the original size fitted wheels.. 185/60 R14
Something else... The dealer had 3 diferent sizes of ARB. 18mm (like mine),19mm, and 20mm.I know that the 18mm bar is for 1.4 petrol engines and the 20mm is for TDI.I wonder the 19mm what engine should it be for?Maybe 2.0 MPI.Should I go back to the dealer and chage it to 19mm?I really don`t know what to do...

Re: Plss Help!!! Replacing the anti-roll bar

I had an old (ie pre '93) saab 900 turbo, no TCS or anything like that, so when you stomped on the go pedal while exiting a corner this happened:-

The outside suspension was compressed by the weight transfer, so the front ARB tried to compensate by compressing the inside suspension (ie its' job). Or to put it another way, it was trying to pull the already unweighted wheel upwards, leading to crippling wheelspin and tyre bills.

So I put in a new rear ARB with fresh linkages and bushes, and removed the front one altogether.

Then, when I stomped on the go pedal exiting a corner, the inside wheel still lost traction, but much less frequently or markedly as it had done previously, and the car was much more driveable, less understeer, and much less wayward (It was still pretty wayward though TBH)

I'm taking the VRs to the stealership soon to get things looked at, then I wanna jabba.

As I said before... I went to the dealer and I change it with the smaller 19mm one...After I install it...you`ll hear again from me..

Re: Plss Help!!! Replacing the anti-roll bar

Yup I made a good choice...installing the 19mm ARB... No understeer at all...
