| Briskodian | seeing that i get overtaken by tractors (ok maybe its not that bad) and that the sdi is supposed to be the most economical model im finding my returns pretty poor. my last figure was 44mpg and although it was very cold, mostly urban its no better than my pug 405. The dealer tells me that no faults have been recorded and i will ask again on my next service (next few weeks) what is the cold start system on the sdi and if it was stuck on would i notice (pasted mot emmisions last week) if there is no fault i can only put it down to the yorkshire hills and the fact that i have a fraction of the torque of most of you guys so im using the accelerator more. on regular trips to my caravan in st agnes im getting 480mls before the buzzer goes so motorway work is alot better. so is it me or the car? |

| My Sdi octy was far better on long runs......... short trips to the shops it did about 40 - 44 mpg but motorway it was up to 50 maybe 55 on a good run......I now have a 130 tdi pd and to be honest the mpg is better....even 32mpg towing a one ton caravan. short journeys still about 44 and long ones ...with a light foot 55 - 60. so yours sounds about right.

noticed the sdi takes along time to warm up, maybe this is another reason for the economy.

| Briskodian | Hi- Seems that diesels generally take a while to warm up! (I'm just getting used to it)- my average MPG is way down for the first 10 -15 mins but by the time I've done 25 miles cross country it's showing 55- 60. Types of journey and driving style also play a huge part in MPGs. One other thing I've read though, diesels do benefit from a good thrashing every so often (Honest John recommends that once run in, you should reach 4500 revs 'regularly' to keep the injectors free and blow all the soot out of the system) I've heard it called an Italian tune up but I'll follow the advice once I'm run in. Sorry if you've heard all this before. Are you calculating real figures or is the computer inacurate?

must admit when the mot guy was reving the hell out of it there was a fair bit of smoke , maybe it does need a good clear out as i dont seem to go over 3k and my partner does a very slow school run every day. maybe i shoud put some injector cleaner in my tank for my next trip to cornwall.

| Briskodian | SDi Fuel Economy.... Regularly getting 53-58mpg on the run to work (10 miles). Took the mother out on Mothers day for a run to Lincoln and got 59mpg at a contstant 80mph on the motorway using the computer. Checked it doing s trip clock/full to the brim check and the computer was within 0.5mpg. I find the car gives more mpg if left in slightly lower gear under a lot of conditions. i.e. third for anything up to 35mph and fourth for anything below 60mph. |

![]() The position of the accelerator pedal is the key to getting good fuel economy - so moving to a higher gear at low revs but needing the pedal pressed down further will result in higher fuel usage than being in a lower gear at higher revs with less pedal. Light right foot is all you need. ![]() Rob.

| Briskodian | just booked it in for the 50k service and i will ask them to check for any faults but maybe it is my driving habits and the yorkshire hills as the mpg for the fully laden (dogs luggage ect) 365 trip to st agnes is in the late 50sto 60 mpg |

| Briskodian | finding my consumption much better now the summer has arrived ,up to about 54 with my other half doing some very long bumper to bumper school runs , found that it goes furthur with morrisons diesel(shell?). the easter run to my caravan worked out at 56mpg including a small amount of towing out of storage, plus the car was fully loaded. |

| Briskodian | Anyone else noticed a sudden improvement in economy after reset the trip computer? I had not bothered to reset the computer for some months and was noticing my calculated ecomomy was always around 55-57mpg on the drive to work. Now after a reset I get between 63-65mpg? This morning I got 68.9mpg! Does the ECU adapt to your driving style? Could a trip computer reset clear the ECU memory so it adapts to my more economic driving style? |

| Diesels are meant to be driven on a distance. It's false economy for short runs as it takes forever to warm up compared to a petrol, it uses loads of fuel relatively speaking and generally those school runs mean you'll get terrible fuel economy overall. I bet it's less than 5 miles roundtrip for that particular part ![]() With the Furby I've found keeping it rev'd above 2k DOES make the economy better when you accelerate at the very least, or when there is load on the engine (more than the slightest incline for example). I definitely try to rev up to 4k a few times a day, once the engine is warmed up. Push it up a little higher still sometimes, 4.5k on occasion, say a few times a week, to keep the injectors and the rest of the system as clean as possible. Babying a diesel is not a good thing to do, short trips make that worse again. I would seriously look into swapping yours for a petrol if you only do short trips.
