Default VRS 3 year residuals seem way off

Just been looking at the 3 year value for the VRS (part ex price) given for the VRS on parkers of £4500. This seems very low as i know people are getting over £8000 for 2 year old ones (03) and the dealers are pricing them for around £10000 and private for around £9500ish.

Compared to the Seat Ibiza Sport or FR which have 3 year values of £5500 and have list price over £1200 more than the VRS, you can pick up a private 03 model for around £8,000 or a dealer 04 model for £9700 ish. You won't find a VRS for that money.

So are the VRS valuations way off? or are prices gonna plummet when we hit the 3 year old mark? The FR Seat is a new model but there still going quite a bit cheaper 2nd hand than a VRS despite the higher list price and supposedly better residual value.

The reason i bring this up is that ive been looking for a 1-2 year old used VRS but there still fetching around £10000 and i can get a brand spanker for another £1200 or pick up a 2 year ibiza sport for £8k ish.

I think it is predicted. When the Fabia vrs is 3, the market will be relatively flooded with them. Prices will drop then im quite sure.

The Fabia is a lot more popular than the FR/Sport so the residuals will be less, also given that the Fabia costs less to begin with, that also means it will be woth less (although it would be roughly thwe same as a percantage from new

so why are the used prices so expensive still?? current demand? lack of used models?

seeing as you can pick up a brand spanker for just over 11k this seems the best option to me at present.

It seems a 1 year old VRS is worth £600-£800 more than a Ibiza FR 130 despite the FR being at least the same amount more expensive new, this is the bit i don't get.

'What Cars' prediction after 3 years is 51% retained value. This link to Parkers gives teh values for a 2003 car. http://www.parkers.co.uk/pricing/use...buyorsell=sell

There are some decent used ones out there. Took me a while to find one, but picked up mine in January for £9600 - that was a 10-month old Black Magic Standard with 6k on the clock.

I thought that was a decent deal, but some people on here have done even better.

Once you've decided you actually want one over the Ibiza just sit tight and wait for the right deal - unless you really want a brand new one. I couldn't quite stretch to one in my case and don't actually regret it 7 months on.

If it holds more than 50% over 3 years, then I'll be happy.

Steve

... and by that time a Fabia replacement will be on the way, and we'll be in the same position the Octy vRS folk are in now. It's just the way the cycle goes.

so the 51% 3 year retained value is 51% of the list price eg £12,380?

= £6314

that sounds a bit more realistic than the £4500 ive seen floating around.

I want the VRS its just annoyng when theres lots of 1 year old ibiza sport 130s floating around for £9600 and 2 year olds for £8k, wish i could find a VRS for that money.

I personally think the VRS will hold up better than the ibiza's for depreciation even though its cheaper to buy new, all the price guides ive used confirm this so far.

Im off to hunt down a bargain used VRS, if you see any send them my way.

Cheers

Parkers is rubbish. The only real trade guide is Glass' Guide, and even that is wrong sometimes.

It basically comes down to supply and demand. Over the last few months, the Fabia has been getting rave reviews, lots of TV coverage by motoring programmes and Skoda have also increased their marketing effort which means that there is a higher demand for the car so people are happy to pay a premium for a 2nd hand car rather than wait 6-8 weeks for a factory build.

In 3 years time, I suspect that most of the people who bought them new will be looking to sell them as their warranties run out and this will mean that the 2nd hand market is flooded with them, which will in turn means it's a buyers market and prices plummet, similar to what has happened with the Octy vRS.....

Will be interesting to see what happens

Chris

One not so careful owner. Never been on the track, not mapped and completely standard (except for the silver handles of course) I suspect
