Have found a black 53 furby VRS with FSH but with 90k miles for just under £6k. Seem to be on for nearer £7k for ~60k miles. Cant really afford the extra £1k due to my ruddy wedding (would rather have an new SE n a remap over 1 day of expense, but dont tell the missus).

Should I hold out for a refresh of the market or go for it?

Go for the dearer one, tell the future missus, how much more exciting a day she could have at knockhill, rather than spending it in church with the relatives

I am sure knockhill will have a spare 0 ring lying around that you could give her

Really? Obviousily bit of room to haggle but I have not seen much cheaper options on autotrader, for sale section and looking at completed ebay bids.

To me it depends on how you look at mileage vs. age of the car - bear in mind this is only my opinion so you may well disagree.

Given the choice, I would always go for an older lower mileage example rather than a newer one with higher mileage.

To give an example, I paid about £6k in November for my 52 plate 1.9 TDi Elegance with 20k miles.

To me 90k miles is pretty high. I would expect a 6 grand car to depreciate about £700 per 10k miles. I would think that by the time you've added 20k to that it's not going to be worth £5,500 so it seems a bad buy. Regardless of how good the engine is, you're also going to need to replace a lot of ancilary components (suspension components etc) at that mileage.

The other seems by far the better bet but I would still hold out. Looking at autotrader, it seems the most choice is around the £8k mark (e.g. 53 plate VRS with 14k miles!!). Although it's over budget, you might find that you save some if not all of this in servicing costs over the first year of ownership.

Alternatively, keep watching Autotrader. Quite often you'll see a really good example just hanging around and then suddenly drop in price which is a good time to make a move.

I think there are some slightly better value cars out there but I don't think values will fall just yet, the car is very much in demand.

I think the vRS is perfectly capable of the higher mileages - I'd get a proper inspection done, and buy on CONDITION, not mileage or price.

Saying that, I think £5k is nearer the mark

I was only offered £6k-£7k part ex for my 05 plate!!! (because it had 80k on the clock) so I'd try offering less......

If all is OK (its been serviced currently) will offer £5250 or something. Think there is only so much can haggle down. Although Parkers says about £5k with the miles.

If Parkers is saying about £5k then it's maybe not so bad.

I have no doubt that the VRS is capable of high mileage BUT some I would expect that a lot of components would reach the end of their service life at that age.

Example - friend of mine has a BMW with a 3 litre diesel. Great car, fantastic condition and full BMW SH - but the two injectors failed. Got them replaced and then another is on the way out. £350+fitting+VAT each! Car has tons of life in it still but there's a bit of a hump to get though.

Again, it's only my opinion, but if I was going for a higher mileage example I would wait until the mileage was a bit higher (the car can fundamentally cope with this), consequently pay less for it, and have someone else have the expense and hassle of dealing with this period.
