Default What A Slow Car

While my 1,9 TDI is at the dealers I was given a 1,2 Fabia bohemian estate, today had to go on the motorway with 2 adults/2 kids a bit of luggage and to say it's slow is a understatement. I had a 1.2 HTP before my Vrs and now my 1.9TDI and it was never aas slow as the estate I guess the extra weight of the estate does not help. Plus you don't realise how good the heated mirrors are when you don't have them like the bohemian. People thinking of buying the new estate please stay away from the 1.2 engine.

a 1.2 in an estate is ludicrous

When I was buying a Fabia, had the test drive in a 1.2 Estate, then (and still do) think its quite odd to have an estate version with this engine size, Skoda still have a 1.2 in the new estate model. If was going to have a Fabia estate it would have to be a 1.9.

I drove a 1.4TDI new Fabia. I like the 1.4TDI, but felt it struggled a bit with the weight.

Try driving a 1.0 petrol Corsa D.

Apparantly it is "dangerously" slow off the mark

It's not actually that bad an engine, very good for a 1.2 in fact. It produces nearly as much BHP as the 1.4MPI, but has much better fuel consumption,

From the reviews Iv'e read it sounds very good (3 Pot) and goes pretty well for it's size,

The estate isn't that much heavier than the hatch anyhow, but I can imagine it being bloody awful loaded with people and luggage. Skoda have upped the 1.2 to 70BHP in the Fabia II, thats a 6BHP increase from the 64BHP in the Fabia I.

Maybe Fabia I owners can tune theirs to be the same?, I don't know exactly what it is they have done to it, could just be the mapping

I used to have a 1.2HTP hatch and I loved the engine and now my brother has one and he was shocked how over strain the engine sounded. When I was on the motorway in my old 1.2 it managed to fly past cars ok.

I reckon if you have any headwind at all, it would be better to face the car the other direction and let the wind take you along - caravan and all - in the originally intended direction.

TBH - though have not looked it up - would have thought there'd be little difference between them weightwise
Bit like Origami - i.e. folding out the 'folds' to make a rectangular (ish) box but, in doing so, having virtually no effect on the weight.

I had a brief drive in the Ibiza 1.2 in 2002 or 2003.
I quite liked the engine note.

Although if I was buying an estate version of the Fabia I'd need to test drive it to see how it feels with a slightly larger car.

We have the new 1.2 70bhp. Its fine around town and solo on the motorway, but I wouldn't like to drive any distance full loaded.

We have a 1.2 Silverline Estate, ace around town and it holds it own on the motorway, sits at 70/75 all day.

I think it's a good engine. The best thing about it is you can rev it to 6000 revs and it still sounds like it wants to give more, unlike alot of NA engines.

However, as has been said, if I was to buy an estate and was likely to take a lot of luggage around plus people on a motorway it wouldn't be the right choice.

But if you want an estate just to take yourself around and the dog in the boot it would be fine, and cheap. That's why theres a choice in the engine range.

Best thing about the 1.2 is the noise.....sounds like one of these when driven hard.

But yes, it is a little underpowered IMO.
