Post Is Your AUB (1.4 16v) Reliable?

Hi Everyone,

I'm interested to know if your AUB code 1.4 16v Engine has been reliable..

If youe engine has been fine then please post, I'm hoping to build this lumps reputation up!

Please exclude the hunting / fluttering tick over unless it's caused major issues as this appears to be a very common design floor as well as anything not related to the engine.

I'll start,

Done nearly 20,000 in my Y (01) pleate 100bhp. I Get Fluttering and my temp sensor went.. but mostly Engine is still strong and running fine.. maybe a little tapperty when cold or laboring the engine at low revs.. but it's done 70k so we'll forgive it that!

Any Replaies Appreciated..
Rob :-)

Re: Is Your AUB (1.4 16v) Reliable?

Ive got the AUA engine in my Polo. Lumpy idle, plus other little niggles with it like a notchy gearbox, windows that go part of the way down and an engine management light come on when it wants to and then goes off. Apart from that runs well although I find the throttle response isn't brilliant.

My mates have said if ive had this much trouble with VW I should forget them altogether and go back to Vauxhall. My 1st car was a Mk3 Astra 1.4, N reg and I didn't have half the problems that my Polo has. My dad had it before me with 8k on the clock and didn't have a problem with it. I got rid of it at 120k wanting something newer, more solid and reliable. How wrong I was

I bought the car before becoming a member here. If id have just searched for the engine code id have never bought it.

I'm quite worried now. I really want a Fabia vRS but I'm hoping it doesn't have as many problems if none at all. I thought VW engineered cars were supposed to be reliable?

If you have a piston ring issue and its clogging up with oil just fit a catch tank so it doesnt breath it all in.

I've been driving VAG cars for 20 years now, and all of mine/SWMBO's have been reliable, considering age/mileage. That's 2 Golfs (1981 and 1988), 2 Polos (1984 and 2001), one Lupo (2000), two Sciroccos (1982 and 1985), one Ibiza (1998), one A3 (1999) and one Fabia (2005). I honestly think they've all been fine.

Back on-topic:

The Lupo is a 1.4 16V 100BHP, but it's AFK. It's had one instance of hunting, cured with a throttle-body alignment, and other than that and a clutch cable has had nothing but servicing since we've owned it. It's got 45K miles on the clock, and uses hardly any oil- virtually none. It doesn't do very many miles though.

GREAT! More like this please....

so, it's leaning on the not so reliable side.. but not much more than 60%?..

Come on you 1.4 16v AUB etc owners!! Lets at least give this engine a fair trial as it always seems to be negative comments on the forum! (as is a forums nature, hence I started this thread!)

Well I had a starter motor go at 34000 miles if you want something different to take away attention from the usual piston rings/fluttering tickover problems.

Re: Is Your AUB (1.4 16v) Reliable?

My AUB 16v Elegance is my first Skoda.
The heavy oil usage went away after I cleaned out the airbox pipes, the choked rubber filter thing and the crankcase breather. I'm looking at venting the breather to atmosphere because it's serving no real purpose.
My only niggle is that my power steering sensor occasionally plays up. Came home from Glasgow last night and when I came to park it it went really heavy. Today it's just fine again...
Oh and it turned 89k last night and gets 47mpg regularly on the motorway and sometimes 50+ on the backroads. It also out corners most BMWs and the like. In fact (really pushing!) it stayed ahead of a Mitsi Evo7 over the Cairn O'Mount road two weeks ago. Anyone who knows that road will understand that this happened because A, I'm a loony and B, the Evo driver wore a blouse.

I love it!

Re: Is Your AUB (1.4 16v) Reliable?

My 2002 AUB Comfort has done about 54,000 miles and the uses a bit of oil but definitely not too much (yet). I have cleaned out the breather in the air filter and it seems to run better for it.
It had full Skoda history and was still on it's original plugs and air filter up until I bought it last year with 45,000 miles on the clock. I've just had to replace the front lambda probe to cure the CEL light. I think I have a problem with the air conditioning compressor as it was left to run almost dry when there was a leak in one of the pipes and the local stealer couldn't find a fault even though there was a puddle of compressor oil under a joint in the pipe.

Fuel consumption on the tank before last was about 39 mpg, and on this tank has been 36 mpg - not good and no change in driving style.

Road tax at £170 per year is also criminal for a 1.4!

Do you have a part number for the airbox breather hose/filter? I'm looking to replace mine.

Re: Is Your AUB (1.4 16v) Reliable?

2000 AUB with 75k on the clock, fantastic little engine, loves to rev it's nuts off. Mine has very little oil consumption, BUT I keep the crankcase vent system clean, have used the occasional engine flush, and change oil + filter every 5k miles.

Sorry I don't, but the original pipe will do you just fine. Just remove the rubber bung at the breather pipe end and all will be well.

These Are Fantastic!

I knew I couldn't be the only one with an AUB that wasn't completely rubbish (knocks on wood) ;-)

Keep em coming (if there's any of you left?)
